82 in 32 balls or 128 in 84 balls....na..it aint IPL scores my friends, thats Kapil's one among many knocks and that too way back in 1982 against the mighty west indies.....its sad that we arent much aware what he did to Indian and world cricket expecially the batting strike rates and the passion with which he played which often doesnt reflect in the stastistics. Its heartening to note that Sunil Gavaskar has duly acknowledged Kapil's greatness and how we wish if he was born in this IPL era....he would have torched the stadium with his batting fireworks and allround abilities....long live kapil !!

In 1982, India won a ODI for the first time against WI at Berbice where India scored 280 odd led by 90 by Gavaskar and then Kapil who scored 72 off 36 balls. WI were restricted to 255/7 in 50. In 1985 World Series semi finals against NZ India needed to score 207 to win and were 126/3 in almost 35 overs, Kapil scored 50 off 30 balls and with Vengsarkar had a 80 run match winning partnership. But Kapil's greatest innings was no doubt 175 not out which to this day is unmatched even today in ODIs, given the match situation (India were 9/4 when Kapil walked in to bat) and then 17/5. He was an outstanding sportsman and a great all rounder who could walk into the team on just the batting, bowling or fielding abilities. Players like him appear once in a generation and need to be saluted.

Kudos to Daniel & Permalink for the astounding facts !! Imagine a strike rate of 126 in 80's and Kapil retired a strike rate of 96.64 (if i am not wrong)...while his generation was content with a strike rate of 50 or so....its sad this generation wont even believe the kind of talent Kapil was ...i feel Sehwag has that kind of raw talent minus allround and charisma...but kapil could have achieved more and no wonder he has been truly rewarded with the Indian cricketer of the century which sadly was debated in India but supported by viv richards and even Imran for that matter...speaks volumes !!

Kapil scored those runs against the world's best fast bowling attack and such attack doesnt exist today.

He's great man than any other captain India has produced(not a comparision)...during 80's with that kind of strike rate, not much modern techniques & resources, good fielding(which need to be admired especially in Indian team that too during 80's), & ofcourse the bowling...who has the skills with leadership qualities...forget about all these ...who has got the worldcup for India...other than GREAT KAPIL...our hero... & last but not least..they were not paid like these...not much money thru advertisements,.they worked hard to get & reach those kind of miles...it has to be SALUTED...than any other Indian players...(its the fact..not a comparision)...today..you play one cricket match score a 100(doesn't need to know bowling...& not much with fielding)...but still u will be a hero on/off the field (for nothing)...so being greatest during that period (80's) is greatest EVER....

In his innings of 72 off 36 balls that is mentioned here, he scored almost 35 runs off Larry Gomes. This is not to diminish his efforts but just to lay the facts that not all the runs were scored off the quick bowlers.

yes. i remember the 1985 world series in which ind beat pak in ausi. shastri was mos n won the audi car. but in all the matches, shastri used to score at tortoise pace. n it was kapil who had to step up the scoring while coming down the order and win matches for ind.

Sastry provided the stability in the opening and there was never a need to score fast as India always restricted the opponenets with in 200. Kapil scored fast in only one match against Newzeland and we could still win that match comfortably even without scoring that fast, as Vengsarkar was already settled on the other end after foundation of Sastry. In addition, we had Gavaskar, Amarnath and Kirmani yet to bat. All players of that team played as per needs. One paradim is that only those who score fast are treated as contributors. we need to change that.

I remember watching this match and scared to death as Shastri and Azhar couldnot score runs. Then when both got out it was Kapil who came after vengsarkar who stgrted the fast scoring and then Vensarkar got the momentum.
The 1983 world cup win was perhaps the biggest cricketing moment in Indian cricket history especially for transforming Indian cricket forever. Until then, Indians were not even considered serious ODI team but that win turned everything head on and suddenly India were truly on world ODI stage. At that time good fielding was not even considered a requirement in Indian cricket but due to extraordinary fielders like Kapil, Binny, Madan Lal, Sreekant Indian fielding could compete against the best in the world. Kapil's outstanding catch (he made it look so easy) that he took by running almost 25-30 yards in the direction of the ball is still etched in memory. At that time it was pity that Doordarshan (or boredarshan),being the only TV station in India chose not to telecast some key moments of the game due to strange reasons. Nor could we watch the majestic 175 live on TV due to strike by TV crew. The 1983 winning team deserve all the kudos for one of the greatest triumphs in Indian cricket history.
