My thought on this
by Avis Dhir Samanta on Sep 28, 2005 02:25 PM  Permalink

I think it is very easy to sit down over here, and critic about what is happening. However, there are a lot of situationa, which i am sure a lot of us have faced - i did, where you are not sure of what actually transpired. MAybe, not enough proofs - whatever. Hence, i think you cannot pass your judgement just by listening to them. I think these men are responsible enough to do thier jobs. We know how talented they are and its not everybody's cup of tea what these men are doing. grant them a little respect, and leave it to them to resolve issues. I am pretty confident that they also want India to gain, you are not the only one Mr. Prem !
I hope maturity will prevail now, atleast from the analysts sitting out here.

Ganguly in team not as a captain.
by dhananjay on Sep 28, 2005 02:23 PM  Permalink

Ganguli should step down as captain. But should be retained in side at no 6 th or 7 th position in odi & test both. many teams you will find, like jayasurya (sri lanka),yousouf Youhana(pakistan) are ex-captain, cocentrating on their batting are rich treasure of experience. This will give both time for sourav to be on his feet and reducing burden on him & to the team a new captain with fresh ideas. dravid as a captain and either sehwag or kaif as vice-captain with 2007 in view. BCCI should stop system of axeing current captain to have new one altogether. Remember how Tendulkar flourished without captaincy again?

coach-captain stand off
by praveen on Sep 28, 2005 02:23 PM  Permalink

the whole issue was brought out into the open because saurav ganguly managed to score a century in the particular test match.he would have stayed silent if the zimbabweans had rooted his wicket for a meagre score.he was riding on the confidence he might have gained by scoring a century.

Chappell- Ganguly: Is this doing any good?
by Arun on Sep 28, 2005 02:17 PM  Permalink

BCCI: What right do you have to sort out the issue between Chappell and Saurav?
You should first decide whats more important, Cricket or Power.
No one has the right to talk about INTEREST OF INDIAN CRICKET unless they are truly professional in their approach.

Chappell was preferred to all other contestants for the position of coach because they felt he is a true professional and they wanted to concentrate towards 2007 world cup.
What did he do wrong?
Trying to project the best 11 for every match?
Trying to see who can play well at what level?
What ever is happening now proves he is still a professional but we have a set of people controlling the whole movie who like to enjoy power and make money.

In a country where cricket is a passion where people consider stars more than what they are, expectations are high. But learn from Australia. You do not play you are out. We have enough talents waiting to prove.

Isnt this same in India? Is there any shortage for talents?

Its sad to see Indian cricket going through this phase.

Fake of Indian Cricket
by R. Ram Kumar on Sep 28, 2005 02:12 PM  Permalink

As per words of Mr.Mahendra, they both (Saurav & Chappell)should be compromised and work together. Chappell is not a player of the team, to compromise and work together with another player. He as a coach has done his duty, by pointing out where is fault and where to be corrected. The main point he mentioned is 'ganguly is unfit by mentally and physically'. This is not compromising question. It is a enquriring question to ganguly. I like to point out the selection policy of the Australians. They first select the 12 players and then finally choose the captain, among 12. But in India, after selecting the captain only, the rest of the team is selected with consulting this selected captain. One more thing I like to point out - Australians have lost one day series angainst New Zealand in 2002-03 at home. Immediately, the Australia Cricket Board, dropped the captain Mastermind Steven Waugh from the one day series. But, our Ganguly is continuing in the team as a captian, even though lost of many series in finals and test series. This is the fake of our Indian Cricket. A best team need not have a 12 ever best players; but, a wise captain is a must to handle this 11 players. That's all.

Chappel-Ganguly spat
by kevin pinto on Sep 28, 2005 02:07 PM  Permalink

There is one thing that stands outright, i.e we the people are being made fools by the so called bigwigs of cricket. One thing is true here that politics ,rules indian cricket, coz, how would u explain ganguly still playing for India, when fantastic players like Matthew Hayden, Gilchrist, D Martyn have all been shown the red flag. Perform or u r out of the team. It is so sad to see Ganguly coming to the crease match after match and getting out when the team needs runs so badly.I totaly agree with chapell that Ganguly should practise more in the league matches and when he has found his nick should he come back to the international circuit. Until then let some one else perform for team India.

Is Chappel a liar, Mr. Mahendra
by shyamal ghoshroy on Sep 28, 2005 02:06 PM  Permalink

The question is not of Mr.Chappel being a liar. The question is the modus-operandi of the Indian coach. There is no doubt that Chappel's style of functioning is different and it has led to severe indigestion to many a top order cricketers of the present team. The clash, that was inevitable at some point of time,is certainly an eye-opener for the good of Indian Cricket. Today, the vital question must be, whether Chappel should be kept as the coach. As Ganguly's days are numbered, whoever comes in his place-be it Rahul,Sachin or Sewhag-will bear the similar brunt. Are they prepared? How come, a newly appointed coach without proving anything so far, dares to malign the most successful Indian Captain with more than 15000 international runs behind him, that too with some filmsy and absurd allegations? If Mr. Chappel enjoys support from some people for his infamous e-mail to the board, it is only due to Ganguly's off-form.Some people (read influential?)might have tried to engineer this coach-captain stand-off making Chappel as the scape goat who will take long to understand Indian Sports Politics. For the sake of Indian Cricket, Mr.Chappel must quickly learn how not to be a "Chappel of Discord

Re: Is Chappell a liar
by Bhagya Mohan Konwar on Sep 28, 2005 02:03 PM  Permalink

Hi,
Prem Panicker writes what he wants to say very clearly, as he does normally. But there are a few points worth considering:

(a) All players look after their own interests first. In our cricketing culture (or any other sporting culture for that matter), a little subterfuge - like faking a small injury - has always been acceptable to serve one's own interest. Ganguly obviously thought he would get away with it like everyone normally does. And it looks like he did not do it in a Test.
(b) However unfit, physically and mentally, a captain is in the coach's opinion, the start of an overseas series is not the right time to even "suggest" he should step down. I would not give too many points to Chappell there for getting what he wanted done effectively - i.e. to get rid of Ganguly. A coach has to show more personnel skill.
(c) As for Chappell losing credibility after BCCI has effectively labeled him a liar, it does not matter if he loses credibility with the public and the press. That is not his job. Whether he will retain cerdibility with the players is hardly going to be affected by what BCCI thinks of him, though some people may try to take advantage of that fact.
