Re: Is Chappell a liar
by Bhagya Mohan Konwar on Sep 28, 2005 02:03 PM

Hi,
Prem Panicker writes what he wants to say very clearly, as he does normally. But there are a few points worth considering:

(a) All players look after their own interests first. In our cricketing culture (or any other sporting culture for that matter), a little subterfuge - like faking a small injury - has always been acceptable to serve one's own interest. Ganguly obviously thought he would get away with it like everyone normally does. And it looks like he did not do it in a Test.
(b) However unfit, physically and mentally, a captain is in the coach's opinion, the start of an overseas series is not the right time to even "suggest" he should step down. I would not give too many points to Chappell there for getting what he wanted done effectively - i.e. to get rid of Ganguly. A coach has to show more personnel skill.
(c) As for Chappell losing credibility after BCCI has effectively labeled him a liar, it does not matter if he loses credibility with the public and the press. That is not his job. Whether he will retain cerdibility with the players is hardly going to be affected by what BCCI thinks of him, though some people may try to take advantage of that fact.
