Letter to the PM on Ramsetu
by Anand YNI on Jul 30, 2008 10:12 PM   Permalink | Hide replies

Hon. PM Dr. Manmohan Singh

I am writing to you because I am very concerned about the insensitivity of the Government of India to the religious sentiments of the Hindus & I take strong exception to a wholly incorrect interpretation - an extreme distortion – of Hindu scriptures by lawyer Fali S. Nariman, who represented your Government before the court on July 22 & reportedly quoted from "Kamba Ramayana" & "Padmapurana" that, "Ramayana" expressly speaks of the destruction of the bridge. However, there is no mention of the original "Valmiki Ramayana". This is ample proof that the govt is quoting from scriptures only to help the destruction of ramsetu. While "Kamba Ramayana" like "Tulsidas Ramayana" has been modified to suit the local taste, it can not be taken as an authentic source outside Tamil Nadu, just as the "Tulsidas Ramayana" is restricted to certain parts of North India. This is not the case with "Valmiki Ramayana", which is universally accepted as the sole authentic scripture. The integrity of the bridge cannot be destroyed if it is contrary to our faith. It was superman-made. That is the belief. You cannot worship something that has been destroyed."

Aside from the distastefulness of a lawyer of Mr. Nariman's stature feeling the need to distort Hindu scriptures in an attempt to obtain favorable orders, Mr. Nariman's reference to Lord Rama as "superman" is blasphemous, scurrilous & an extreme distortion that I find insulting to my Hindu faith.

Furthermore, I am concerned about the fact that, in spite of unanimous agreement among political, religious and scientific communities in India as well as abroad that the SSCP has been inaugurated without any detailed review of the views of important stakeholder groups, your Government has filed an affidavit seeking permission to go ahead with the SSCP and submitting that the archaeological survey (ASI) is not important. This is a clear signal that your Government plans to move ahead with the SSCP at the cost of offending the religious sentiments of millions of Hindus around the world and permanently ruining the Gulf of Mannar Biosphere, which may be one of our last remaining natural environments that have not been blemished by man!

I beg for the full & unmitigated protection of Ram Sethu in perpetuity including the Gulf of Mannar Biosphere from further damage. I also beg for the respect due & implementation of the full force & intent of pertinent international Conventions and India's Environmental Laws. I therefore urge you to immediately suspend all work on the project & withdraw all equipment forthwith from the site & appoint an independent commission to ensure that views of important stakeholder groups not consulted in the first round are taken into account. Kindly take into account the offence & hurt being felt by millions of Hindus around the world are outraged & are now more than ever watching the proceedings of this case with great vigilance.

Our ancestors never saw Ram Sethu from a Satellite view, but now that those pictures are available with modern technology, we see that seen from space, it appears as a thread linking the two countries – India and Sri Lanka. To cut this thread, sacred to many millions will bring great misfortune, not only for the invaluable biodiversity of the Gulf by muddying the pristine, clear waters but also to the humans who live around it by destroying the fisheries and salinating the fresh water wells of the area.

I request you to respectfully acknowledge that SSCP is an ill-conceived venture and accommodate our rights as Hindus. I pray that you will see and be moved to understand how spirituality anchors us as Hindus to our sacred heritage and is crucial to our existence, survival and well being. There are a lot of rumors that this project will not be cost effective since dredging is repeatedly required, thus benefitting only the dredging company presumably controlled by one of your ministers, Mr T R Baalu, and his family.

We are the custodians of what we find here during our time. We do not have the right to destroy everything in the name of development. Some things are priceless and must be left for every generation after us to enjoy as well. Please leave Ram Sethu alone for posterity.

I admit that these are indeed times that try men's souls, and our survival as a decent race depends on a response that is the fruit of reason rather than political and economic compulsions. Therefore, I implore you to stand for the right whether anyone else does or not.

Respected Dr Singh, provide the great leadership the world needs at a time when political, social and terrorist upheavals are at an all-time high. May your legacy be that you had the valor to be a protector, defender, and fighter against all odds in defense of Dharma.

I hope that the recent prayers invoked by your family at Amritsar bear you out to be a worthy son of the soil with the courage to act decisively. Please do all you can to protect our glorious heritage for generations to come.

Yours sincerely,
Dr Y N I Anand

You are concern about Ram Sethu - are you concern about the 1000's of Tamil Fishermen being killed each year there?
Bloody hypocrite.

Hi Vijay,

Thanks for the support.

Tamilians like Quest are known to be very selfish. They want everything for themselves and none for others. They are perpetually hungry for more for themselves and starvation for others.

A very small example is the extravaganza of the Surface transport minister, TR Baalu in allocating more than 20% of the budgeted amount for the roadways for Tamil Nadu only. Rest of the country has to make do with the balance amount! They may go to dogs and Tamilians at power could n't care less. Adding to the woes are the most incompetent PM and his back seat driver.

Again, whne it comes to the question of granting Classical Language status to Telugu and Kannada, the only person in the committee who objected to this proposal is a Tamilian. He even postponed his visit to US for the purpose of voting against the motion. He wants no other language in the country to be given any status anywhere near Tamil. Even the ancient language, Sanskrit got the status one year after Tamil got it.

I have nothing against Tamil but all against their selfish policies and ideas.

Tamilians' policy is "Live and Let Others Die".
