disclose the agreement
by Stew India on Jul 08, 2008 05:39 PM   Permalink | Hide replies

This is quite ridiculous. As a lawyer who has negotiated deals with the government before, I know that none of the agreements that the government signs has a confidentiality clause precisely because every agreement may need to be submitted to Parliament. I support the nuclear deal because it will increase our nuclear power availability and dont have a problem separating defence and civilan nuclear stations (which should be separated anyway) but I dont see the logic of what Mukerjee is saying. He gives the impression he has something to hide. They should simply table the agreement in parliament and let it be available with every single person. If it has details of defence establishments (which it shouldnt since it relates to civilain stations only), then make it available to a parliamentary committee at least.

You are absolutey right. This only creates doubts in the minds of supporters. They definitely have something to hide. Also, all the countries in the nuclear club will get a complete copy of the deal anyway as they need to approve it.

There are Military Nuclear establishments which would be out of IAEA purview. These establishment have to be clearly identified and separated. Many such information could be for selected audience only.

Let's BJP did not have full information about our nuclear development till the time they formed the Government. Once they were in Government, they had full access to it.

[Ofcourse, if you have a Defence Minister like George Fernades who took out confidential defence report and started flaunting in press conference even after he ceases to be a Minister, then you can not help.]

WHEN THEY CAN'T UNITE FOR THE SAKE OF NATION.
HOW CAN YOU EXPECT THEY CAN KEEP SECRECY.
HOWEVER GOVERNMENT HAS ALREADY SUBMITTED A SUMMARY TO THE ALLIED PARTIES.
PM HAS ALREADY TOLD EVERYBODY THAT HE WILL BRING IT TO PARLIAMENT FOR DETAILED DISCUSSION BUT ONLY AFTER A NEGOTIATION AT IAEA MEETING. WE HAVE TO BELIEVE OUR PRIME MINISTER. NOBODY SHOULD HAVE doubt for his ability.

What protocol? There is no such thing. Don't just repeat what the minister said.

Then you are not a lawyer.

Try, go and ask for a Judge's appointment procedure.
