volunteer your back yard for the N-waste...
by Nimesh Dikshit on Jul 07, 2008 08:54 PM   Permalink | Hide replies

All those who support the N-DEAL must offer their back yard for the Nuclear waste that it might generate. Why US froze the nuclear plants despite so much of free land. US has so much of land that they can migrate people of one state and use that entire state as N-dump. But they can not do that. Scientists have not been able to find the solution to N-waste in last 40 years. and since there is none. Unless they choose to dump it on Moon or Mars? Until then please offer your backyards as the nuclear waste dumping ground.

Nimesh. Don't dramatize. The current share of nuclear power to total power generation is a measly 3%. After factoring the deal, it is expected to command 6% that too by only 2020.

The way you project is that from 3% India will rely on nuclear power and that there would be a mushrooming of nuclear plants in all nick and corner of the country!

again wrong. Take of actual mega watt number NOT of 3% or 6%.
This % figure is very confusing. N power will be certian percentage which is high at 2020 but then the overpower genretaion assumptoin at that time is also very high. WHich we may or may not get by other sources such as coal, hydo but it gurentee to get by N power

Again, Go Solar for household and private vehicles usage. Which is more than 20% of the current usage. So far as my qualifications are concerned, i have watched the debates done by many scientists and also being a followers of The Mother ( Podincherry ) who has predicted Solar power as the future source of energy back in sixties, I believe India should follow that path. Auroville, once again is the living proof of how the whole town runs off of solar. If one town can run off of solar 180000 towns can also run off of solar. and so are cities....

Prime Ministr has solved USA nuclear waste problem by making India the dumping ground for America's nuclear waste, by the euphmism we will reprocess their spent fuel. Please America has found their dumping gound and now will be able to build 100 persent nuclear power plants unworried about waste because it is being Dump(euphemism reprocessed) in India.

Nimesh,

The U.S. stores its nuclear waste in secure underground facilities for the most part. Yes, there is the question of how to store it in the long term, but we will pollute our air and backyards with carbon emissions from coal and gas long before we run out of space to store nuclear waste. So, let's solve one problem at a time and not overstate the issue.

Moreover, what are the qualifications that enable you to hand down a judgement about the capabilities of science and technology and what they can and cannot achieve in terms of finding solutions to nuclear waste?

Thourgh I am supporter of N-Deal. But on this waste management, get ur facts right. Nature knows who to take care of carbon waste. So todays polution can be contain if we stop poluting.
But nature do not know how to take care of nuclear waste. So one need big containser to put wste underground. It is bit risky thing for future genretauions.

"Today's pollution can be contained if we stop polluting."

And how do we stop polluting?

You have missed my point. My point is that given India's appetite for power and economic growth required to pull its people out of poverty, the additional energy required would have to come from four sources: coal, oil/gas, nuclear, renewable. Renewable is the cleanest, but still years away from being viable. Coal and oil/gas are polluting, and increasing the number of thermal power plants in India will only pollute the environment even more. Nuclear power is the only short-term solution we have that can prevent further pollution in the short run. Yes, we have to build facilities to house nuclear waste, but that's still preferrable to burning more coal/oil and emitting carbon in the air. Unless of course, you have some trick up your sleeve to dispose of millions of tons of carbon dioxide emissions.

And no, nature does not absorb CO2 quickly.

Then go solar. Invest in Solar. There is a whole town called Auroville that runs off of Solar.
