Visa for Mumbai
by on Feb 07, 2008 06:12 AM   Permalink | Hide replies

I think the best solution would be to implement Visa system for Mumbai. All ppl who are not domiciled in Maharashtra must apply for visa(Business/Personal/Work/Socail Visit). This the only way to control the influx of non-deserving, uncivilised, blue collared vandals from other lawless states in India. This can be modelled on HongKong Visa System as it applies to mainland chinese.
Else the dream of putting Mumbai on World map rubbing shoulders with likes of Singapore, HK, Tokyo or Shanghai remains a distant dream.

Influx of non-derserving,uncivilized, blue collared vandals ? Who decides who is non-deserving and uncivilized ? You give examples of 3 cities ... allow me to explain the situation for each of them :
1) Singapore : a country by itself - it should have a visa system....no matter what. Irrelevant to the discussion here, and your point.
2) Hong Kong : The visa requirement for Chinese is mainly due to the difference in Government ideologies (Communist vs Capitalist). You should also know that in HK, the Chinese government keeps the influx of people into HK in control, but does not hesitate to interfere in HK's own political and financial affairs. Just oen example - the HK dollar value fell to 1/5 of it's value since the Chinese take over.
3) Shanghai - A very prosperous city running without any of the so-called 'influx-control' or 'visa' programs you seem to favour.
Bottomline : You can make a prosperous city not with a xenophobic mentality like yours : but with political will and upright leaders.
How much money does it take to enforce laws in Mumbai to prevent s[itting and littering in public places ? How much money does it take to improve sanitation a la HK and SG ? The answer, if you care to look - is ' a fraction of what it would cost to implement a visa system to keep people out '.

Soham,
Most of what you say is right. However regarding Shanghai there is a "hooka" system in China. Its mainly to prevent influx of migrant workers who flock Shanghai in name of earning livelihood. HOWEVER the difference is that it doesnt stop these people on which region they come from. If the people are sponsored by any company/office based in Shanghai there are some formalities which need to be completed and the "hooka" can be obtained.
This system of claiming Mumbai is only for certain"tribe" of people is absurd. Development will happen only with open mind and futuristic policy - not by being regionilist or chauvinist...

That sounds fair. Though I believe in 'Horses for courses' and so Mumbai should have its tailor made policy in place to control the quality of ppl flocking in.

Soham, I didnt intend to compare visa systems of Singapore and Shanghai with hypothetical Mumbai visa system. Yeah HK I did.
Nor did I suggest that all the filth is coming from outsiders.
Furthermore, I dont understand what you mean my 'cleaning' and its incurred cost. I was actually talking about 'Quality' of ppl, necessary to build a successful region.
Hope I made myself clear.
Cheers

There are many non-marathis in Mumbai so Visa system for everybody? I think Maharastra should be separated from India so that you can't move to other states with the kind of freedom which constitution has given you.

No you getting me wrong friend. Everybody(including non-marathis) who are 'domiciled' in Maharashtra need no Visa to enter the city. Rest all will need it.

yh, n that is the reason why there r hardly any "marathi manus" in mumbai proper...coz they can't afford the land there (except the encroachers in dharavai n similar slums, of course"...

You are speaking what Bal spoke in 1968. the only difference is you are using modern world terminology.
Now Bal is opposing this for tarnishing Raj image so that uddhav gets benefit

Thanks for the concern bro. Leave that to Mumbaikars. And you are not getting my point. I never insisted that Mumbai should be made up of only its true natives.A modern Mumbaikar can be Gujju, Southie, Northie or inland Ghati.I said whoever is 'deserving' should be in so as to control the never ending influx of migrants. Else theres exceedingly more filth to clean.
