Indians fail to understand the democracy in the US
by S R Ganguli on Aug 08, 2008 09:41 AM   Permalink | Hide replies

Indians grown up in a concted culture of democracy tempered by dynasty and corruption cannot comprehend the US democracy where checks and balances work in true sense, so the their President does not become too powerful. Senate and the House are both equally powerful to control the Administration. In India the media also acts as chamcha (lackey) for the Govt. Hence all expected that once Bush wants a brownie point the Senators and the reps will fall in line. Senators and House reps are committed to their objectives. They do not have poiliticians like Laloo, Mulayam, Paswan etc.,who only have a single point agenda to make money.

v hv to now face what is hidden in 123 agreement, already india has been told to delete unconditional, now democrats want delay cause it is coming under the hyde act, so people all the blah blah of anand sharma/jayanti/pranab even the pm is now hogwash, we know for sure that in usa it is going to be very difficult to push it thru, it is not like bharat mahan where mps are never available in parliament when imp bills are passed not even 1/ 3rd of members are present. in usa they will make it very difficult for the green signal to this agreement. left and bjp not really wrong in asking for clarifications reg applicability of hyde act to 123 agreement.
wait and watch this drama. there are more surprises in store, even though india may spend millions of dollars in pro /lobby for the agreement in capitol hill.

For functioning of a good democracy it also requires a good opposition. All the BJP could do was to make noise in the parliment and they did every thing from drama to sensation but to discuss any thing on the merit or demerit of the deal

Unfortunately the BJP did not have speakers like Arun Shourie who wrote a long article in about 2 years back in the Indian Express as to the dark sides of the Deal. There was also not Arun Jaitley. Therefore we lost a good debate.

For some reasons, good talents have no place in the political parties.

The old haggard leaders are trivialising each and every issue and bringing down to the street level.

These stupid leaders don't want to play on facts and reasonings. They want to emotionalise each and every issue.

True. But in an election year, neither the Republicans or Democrats want to anatagonize the influential Indian US population, who also significantly emerged as fundraisers to both parties.

So timing of operationalizing the deal was superb.
