I can imagine the reactions of people 75 years back when the so called lower castes were fighting for their rights to enter temples. I can imagine that the reactions would have been extreme. How could one man and his followers have fought against an entire system. The courage of periyar and his intellectual strength won that fight. It is sad but true that the people who are loud and proclaim that they are fighting hinduism are actually doing the most damage to hinduism.

the only revolution in the world which overturned an unjust system by the power of the pen was the movement of periyar. the chief minister of tamilnad has first hand experience of that struggle and when he speaks it is from that experience. whenever the subject of reservation comes in,there are predictable reactions from the youth that caste should be abolished. the youth on rediff that periyar and karunanidhi have laid the foundations for a casteless society. some vested interests will point out to some episodes of recent times. the foundations have been laid.

i apriciate a caste less socity i hate discrimination by anybdy but not karunas way of destroying a beatiful religion, RSS has found VHP to reach it to the lower strata of the society u see the work done by them in tribal areas iam not holding any beidf to VHP

there are commonalities between the north and the south,and there are differences. one of the differences is that rama is not worshipped in the south. shiva is the universal deity of india. the differences need notbe swept under the carpet. we are the greatest democracy because inspite of the differences,we are one nation.

if u see the movie periyar u will see that he was not interested in education and as per dravida standard did not go beyond 3rd standard. he was actively engaged in visiting brothels and bars and also suggested how to correctly "maintain" their business. this is his mental background. the only reason he took up the temple entry issue was to get support of these people for his justice party which was prmoted by the british against the congress (not todays congress) this was politics then and politics now. actually the people who benefitted from the reservation are the the rich obc like mudaliar, naidu, naicker (periyar caste) etc and NOT the sc & st
