Actually Ram sethu was used for walking over to Talaimannar in Srilanka until 1498 AD. Records are available for this in Rameswaram temple. For further details visit the following link:

India and Sri Lanka were connected by a fairly large land mass till 15000 years back when the sea levels were at least 3 meters lower in the last ice age. Ditto was the case between Alaska and Russia. Ice suddenly melted and these causeways went under water spanning a lot of legends around the existence of these bridges. In fact - in 70-90 years - Ram Sethu will be completely disappearing due to global warming.
