Rains ravage Maharashtra
by Naresh Dhawan on Jul 01, 2007 11:13 AM   Permalink | Hide replies

Lot has been said about the flooding in Mumbai during rains and Govt officials are being blamed for the same, but there are many positive aspacts too in this. I am staying in Mumbai for so many years now, and presently I am at Muscat (OMAN) for few months. During recent cyclone (GONU) here, although there was very less rain (normally in Mumbai we call that as drizzle), whole of the city was in Chaos for 4 days. Most of the so called high tech highways (monitored by radars and what nots)were washed away, Ground and 1st floors of the buildings in posh localities were submerged into water, thousands of cars were washed away, and some of the owners are even searching for their vehiles till now (after about a month now). I wonder if here it rains as in Mumbai for just 3-4 hours, the name of this city would vanish from the world map.

The biggest comedy is whenever the Meteorological department predicts something, it always remains a fact far from the actual truth. Its high time the climate news are taken off from the News channel and Meteorological dept starts predicting on their own set of assumptions. Have they EVER predicted right? These guys should either become technologically competent or shut up their stupid mouths forever. I am seriously planning to file a suit against them in the court of law for their inability as Govt has end up spending a lot without actual benefit being derived from them

Thats what I call precision. When ever Indian meteorological dept. says 'no rain', you can be rest assured that it is going to rain:)

My dear Friend, a city's planning is done based on averages and not accidental events. Just like we dont plan for earthquakes as much as Japan does coz we dont experience many earthquakes. Similarly, Muscat is a place that usually does not witness heavy rainfall, so the planning is done accordingly. Hence, what you saw in Muscat may be an exception but what we witness in Mumbai is an repeating annual drama.

The Cyclone in Muscat is not a regular feature and it happens once in a while.

Since the climate of gulf region is much diffrent from India (Mumbai), there is no need to have any infrastructure in gulf to deal with rains or cyclone.

You can not compare Mumbai with Oman as you know for sure that Mumbai will have rain every year come what may, as monsoon is very much part of our climatic conditions.

Hence it calls for a proper infrastructure to deal with monsoon and rains to deal with every year.
