Sending Sanjay Dutt or for that matter any person to jail does not necessarily offer the cure for betterment of an individual. A holistic view should be taken and if the person found guilty of the crime has realised his mistake and is committed to become a better individual and serve the soceity, then the soceity and judiciary should be willing to give them a chance rather than again victimise and stigmatize them. Moreover, the condition of Indian jails and prisons are so pathetic that it would even turn a sane person into an insane person. Sanjay Dutt and Salman Khan have also done many good things and lended their services to many noble causes for the Indian soceity but it is never highlighted by the media. The person's family responsibilities and number of dependants should also be taken into consideration while announcing a sentence to someone. Judges these days pass the sentence based on mere facts , figures and evidences without considering the emotive quotient and humanitarian aspects of life.

Let me then commit some grievious crime, and then undertake some token samaj seva, so I can go scot free...such a system has giant loop-holes for abuse. Only a retarded brain could concieve of such a harebrained scheme.

do you know more than 200 people died and lot many injured in the blast? You see sanjay dancing with heroines and bashing goons onscreen is a good enough reason to pardon him of all crimes he did in real life ?

sajal re jhoot mat bolo. He should be hanged for the deeds he did. If we start pardoning people after they commit heinous crimes and then repent, then every criminal should be pardoned. Whenever a criminal gets caught, he repents. So pardon all. Better stick to your media management and if you have lost some money on the guy for ads, be patient. Catch some other criminal until he is also caught.

Mr. Kabiraj,
1. You say that person's family responsibilities and number of dependents should also be taken care.(etc etc).
As you will agree, many criminals, even murderers have families and children. But when committing the crime, do they think that the persons affected by their crimes also have families? The families of the person (s) killed by the murderer suffer for the rest of their lives, then why should mercy be shown to the criminals? Punishment of the criminals is very critical in dissuading others from carrying out the crime. If as you say, we stop sending criminals to jail and take a "holistic view", should this not be applied for each and every criminal who regrets his crime after committing it? If someone commits murder and then says he regretted it, do you mean that his punishment should be reduced?
I do not agree that while deciding the punishment, the judge should consider and emotive aspects at all. Punsihment should be directly related to the committed crime, nothing more, nothing less. Efforts for rehabilitation, are most welcome, but these should be taken after the criminal has served his sentence, not as an alternative to the sentence.
1. I think good and bad cannot cancel out each other. Reward a person for the good that he has done and at the same time, he also must be punished for the bad acts.
