Missing facts
by selvaraj thangavel on Feb 05, 2007 10:49 PM   Permalink | Hide replies

After Mattur dam came to use from 1934 , the average water released to TN was 378 tmc till 1990 the year before tribunal was set up. Karnataka constructed several dams during 1970s to 1980.The interim order passed to TN was 205 tmc taking into average water flow during 1970 to 80. The interim order also stayed Karnataka not to expand the irrigation land further from 11.2 lak acres. Now this has been increased to 18.85 lakh acres. Obviously it increases the need for water at the expense of poor Tamilnadu farmer.
Whom to blame?
Other interesting factor is normally TamilNadu needs water desperately during June to September period. After October raining period starts by that time all the reservoir in
Karnatak reaches full level and surplus or flood water is released to TN If one can remember what happened last year. This brings better usage of available water at both sides. Unfortunately this tribunal verdict does not address much on how this water sharing mechanisms need to be implemented in both the states.

What would have been your reaction, had it been a situation where Cauvery were to be born in TN and were to flow to Karnataka. Would you able to justify this verdict in that case?

re. the fisrt comment, it may be noted that river is never a mother or a father, it is a compound of oxygen and hydrogen. In summer, due to heat it may evaporate. Do you say that Karnataka's mother is evaporating :))) Re. your second comment, it may be noted that Tamils have always accepted realities and if Cauvery was born in Tamil nadu, they would have made an easy compromise and never have allowed think issue to take larger shape and move to the supreme court. Take the case where Tamil nadu is supplying power to Karnataka without thinking about the language. Think like human beings and never be fanatics.

the first thing everyone should have in their minds is both TN and Kar are part of INDIA. Will people in Mysore block water to Mandya people..?? then why to mettur and Other parts of TN...? Karnataka should understand that TN people are also part of India.. if they are not happy with the verict they can appeal against it or sit and talk with TN.. protesting and violence is no solution for the prob..

I dont see any logical reason in this. You must understand one thing here, Cauvery (Mother of Karnataka in its truest term) is born in Karnataka and flows to TN. There are downstream catchement areas in TN which when rains add the water to it. We are least bothered about it.

I think your comments are really very harsh and are against tamils. You are the one who called the tamilians as beggars. Aren't you ashmed of your language. If you are unhappy with the tribunal go and fight with them and not with the feelings of Tamilians.Check out Karnataka's stake on Godavari and Krishna. These rivers originate in Maharashtra and Maharashtra gets the least stake on those river water sharing.Karnataka and Andhra get the lion's share. Now you want cauvery water also. What do you eventually think? If cauvery were to be originated from Tamilnadu we would have been considerate and will not fight and pass unworhty comments on kannadigas. How long you think will it take for us to pass filthy comments on you people. This show that we are more cultured than you fanatics. Please be considerate as your post is seen by many and dont make a fool of yourself
