It is a historical beleive that forefathers of todays Sinhalies are actually people from Bengali civilization who came and settled in Srilanka about 900 years back. If that is the case, why can't Tamils, who are settled there since 400 years, ask for a good share of this 'anybody's land' ? Can Mr. Tathagat Mukherjee enlighten us on this important issue ?

No Prakash they do say from Bengal (is is not 900yers ago but around 2500 years ago. )but if you look at modern Sinhal dialect they use the word V and not B eg visa ( twenty )Vandura( Monkey)this is west Indic. unlike east indic eg Hind Bis( twenty) Bandhar( Monkey) so most probably thero ancestors have come from north west India eg Gujarat. SIndh. These Prakrit soeaking migrants did not bring their women folk withthem. so even according to their legend Mahavamsa( the great history) they took Tamil women from the Pandyan country as their wives. So in reality they from the inception were half Tamil. Other than this orinial lot of migratns from Noth Indai all other migrants for the next 2500 years were from the SOuth of India. Mainly from Tamil Nadu then Kerala then ANdhra and Orissa. Originally Sinhala meant only the descendants of these Aryan/Tamil Migrants speaking thier Prakrit language. Later with the advent of Buddhism. around 2300 years ago, th eentire island other than the population in the North and East got converted. The language of Buddhism was Pali/Sanskrit. therefore a new language started to evolve. This was a mixture of the Prakrit/Sanskrit/Pali amd Tamil. In fact modern Sinhala has around 35 to 40% Tamil root words. The sentence and the grammatical structure is Tamil. Therefore al lthe local Tamils in the south central north central toghether with the other tribes like the Veddhas. Yakkas, Nagas and the Aryan/Tamil Sinhalas became Buddhists and contd

started to speak this newly evolving langguage and this was called Sinhala. This poeple started to form a cohesive unit and gradually evolved in to the Sinhala people. They later absorbed many of the Chola and Pandyan and others who invaded and setteled amongst them . In fact around 50% of the ancestors of the present day Sinhlas only migrated form southern TamilNadu and Kerala ( when Kerala was Tamil speaking too ) around 600 to 100 years ago. The now consit the Sinhala castes of Karawe,Salagama. Durawe, Hunu etsc MOst menbers of the SInhaa arstocrtic families are of almost pure south Indain Tamil descent. Basically aroudn 2500 years ago aryan migrants came form north India, They married local and Pandyan Tamil womenthier Sinhala decendants were only a saml powerful minority. around 2300 years ago Buddhism came to Sri Lanka . The Local Tamils HIndus in the south central north central Sr Lanka toghether with the Veddhasm and these Rayan /Tamil deecendants converted to Buddhism and adopted th enewly evolving language called SInhala which was mixture of Tamil/ Sansrit and Pali. Around 400 years ago durign the POrtuguese rule the Tamils living in the western and southern Littoral were forcibly converted to Chatholism and man y of them later became Buddhists. These newly converted Catholic/Buddhist Tamils chabged thier languag and became Sinhalese. After independence around 60 years ago the Tamil population in the Chilaw . Puttalam districts were forcibly Sinhalised by the

Sri Lankan government ,Man y of these so calle dSinhlaas because of their recent Sinhalisatin still are able to speak a queer form of Tamil. BUt this is dying out. Whilse this happened the Population in the North and East of Sri lanka lafgely remained unaffected by these Aryan migration and Buddhist introduction. So they stil spoke thier ancient language called Elu this language ws later called Tamil ( then Elu th eElu of the south wich became Tamil) . The Elu the thanthe Buddhist ocnverts spoke became Sinha Elu th eElu othe Sinhalas) and became Sinhala. This writing oth e elu language was called Eluthu. Therefor the any one who reamained HIndu ( the local Tamils trh e Veddhas. Nagas and also the the Aryan/Tamil descendants who never became Buddhist . moved to the North and east and became the Eelam Tamils ( like the SInhalas a signficant minorty of SriLankan Tamil are decended from the original Aryan/ Tami lmixed Sinhalas the ones who did not convert ot Buddhism but got assimilated by the Tamil Hindus) These Eelam Tamils Historically like th SInhalsa assimillaed many of the Chola/Pandayan and Kalinga invaders who setteld amongst them, The British aroudn 150 to 200 years ago brought in the South Indian ( mainly Tamil but amny Malayalees ( eg MGR ancestors) and Telugus) as indentured labourers. they are very different from the Native Eelam Tamils in theirhabbit language cutomes etc and live in the south
