Origin of original Sinhalies

It is a historical beleive that forefathers of todays Sinhalies are actually people from Bengali civilization who came and settled in Srilanka about 900 years back.
If that is the case, why can't Tamils, who are settled there since 400 years, ask for a good share of this 'anybody's land' ?
Can Mr. Tathagat Mukherjee enlighten us on this important issue ?
