One of my american collegue asked me, do you know hindi? I said yes. He asked me why doesnt all of you indians know hindi, which she was told is a national language of India. She said that she was surprised that one of her collegue(a tamil) told her that ENGLISH is the national language in India. I love my country and I dont want people to laugh on what my fellow tamilian said. I told her that in India, we believe in tolerance. We do not force people to speak one language, or to follow one religion. Thats the reason why India is binded together depite several cultures and religions. I dont mind you tamilians dont speak or learn hindi, but atleast dont claim that Hindi is NOT the national language and its English. atleast 70% people of India speak that language. Tamil is spoken by probably 10%. Even English speaking people are less. Wherever I went, Punjab, Gujrat, UP, Bihar, Maharashtra, KERALA, Andhra, WB, Rajasthan and the list goes on, I get Hindi speaking people, except one state TN.

@ True Indian: Your first half of the messages prides on India being tolerant and a mixture of varied cultures and languages, but the second para laments on not finding hindi speakers in Tamilnadu. I am not sure which school of thought you belong to but since the tone of your message is mild, I thought I should respond.
Fact: India has something called official languages but nothing called a national language, it is simply not there in our constitution. Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu... are some of the languages that are considered official by the Indian government. So if talking in Tamil is unconstitutional or Un-Indian as some of the mad-men in this forum term it, please get an amendment made and get it implemented in all the states across India to talk in Hindi. I am sure you will have a fun time getting it implemented :-).
Also if you think you can get by with Hindi in Kerala or Andhra, I am not sure about your travels, maybe you are not as well travelled as you may think because you sure as hell cannot get by with Hindi in WB or Kerala or Karnataka. I would invite you to try in the Eastern states as well, Sikkim, Assam etc. Good luck on those :-).
Tamils are very very proud of their language and they should be. It is the only surviving Indian language that is comparable to Sanskrit, both in age and in literature and this is a hard-cold fact and people need to get over their hang-ups. The Indian government honours only two classical languages, Sanskrit and Tamil a
