Nuclear energy to meet rising needs
by NILANJAN SENGUPTA on Aug 20, 2007 11:41 AM   Permalink | Hide replies

There is no doubt that we need nuclear energy in association with other forms of energy like wind, solar etc. But those should not be at the cost of our national sovereignty. The Indo-Us Nuclear Deal as it stands now is a hush-hush affair and lacks transparency. So far it appears that there will be curb on our indegenous technologies.

Solar is the best alternative. To run a car, we need foot ball ground size solar panel. Great alternative! To power a house, we need to keep the whole house w/ hundred thousand dollars for each house & by the time, it gets break even, we need to change the panel.

Solar is the best alternative. We can fit solar into the mud-huts in kolkatta & produce energy.

Regarding wind, if there is no wind, we can ask all the lords. In the worst case, if there is no wind, we can do the style old kitchen oven (using a long pipe blow the turbine)

I know atleast one house in kolkatta might have these type of kitchen to get example. We can send team of expert to get the wind blowing technology from Kolkatta kitchens.

I am not sure whether you are conversant with energy technologists. But if you go through the journals and literatures related to this you will find even in the western countries the policy makers are opting for alterantives like solar, wind, bio-fuel, geo-thermal etc. and the cheaper version of these are being explored. Nuclear Energy is not a cost-effective option considering the capital cost, safety cost, waste disposal cost and fuel recycling cost. Even then it might be one of the best alternatives considering the present demand of power.
But again the deal with a country like US, who dropped atom bombs twice and who do not hesitate to topple sovereign governments to get hold of their oil storage, should be dealt with cautiously.
