When RK made Mera Naam Joker(MNJ), he had great expectations from it but the movie flopped at box office. It had the plot, it had beautiful songs, it had good acting, yet it did not appeal to the public at that time. Raj Kapoor took this to heart and came out with Bobby with two new comers to launch his son Rishi Kapoor (who was in Mera Naam Joker as child artist) and Dimple Kapadia. He had a point to prove to the same public which had rejected MNJ and he proved it with Bobby. We now have son of Rishi Kapoor - Ranbir and Sonam as the lead pair of Saawariya. SLB too has a point to prove on many fronts with the new comers, new composer, new-different kind of sets and with the simplest of love stories. One who is in true love will appreciate this movie more than a person who goes to a hall just to have outright fun seeing a masala Bollywood flick.
The way SLB has woven the fabric with frail thread of love is commendable. Agreed, the original story has been stretched a bit too long to have weak links here and there, yet on the whole, the movie is a work of art, that not everyone can understand and appreciate..not the masses atleast. To that extent, Saawariya may take a beating at box-office just as MNJ did.
While I was seeing the movie, I felt - What the heck! Why is it dragging and so long. This feeling was there all through the movie in most parts. After I came out and was driving back home, I was still thinking of the movie and the more I thought about it, the more I l

I liked it. The camera shots, the direction, the sudden break of giggle by Sonam while she has the inherent fear of social stigma, the spontaneous acts by Ranbir, the hidden meaning in facial expressions of Ranbir n Sonam including the dialogues are note worthy. The music was a hit even before the movie released but the songs grow on you instantly when seen in the movie. Dialogues delivered by Ranbir is exactly the same as Rishi while Sonam exudes a million emotions through her eyes and innocence.
The expectant smile on Zora Sehgals face - that of Ranbir to return return while she is feeling his photo-frame with her fragile old hands is the epitome of this movie. Many will not even notice this scene but it has to be a SLB to conceive it in his head to give a colossal dimension to it.
Javed Akhtar had once said, - There are many good movies which are box office hits that one appreciates while it is running yet forget them later but there are few movies which are not appreciated or hit when seen but many years down the line, one still remembers then and the reasons why they were not a hit.
After Mera Naam Joker, Saawariya is one such master piece that falls in this category.
