Let us accept our cinema
by Kapil on May 11, 2007 11:43 AM   Permalink | Hide replies

Dear Friends,
While readers commenting on a publication is a very acceptable thing, calling Agneepath absurd is taking it to a different level, a sacrilege for the Genre of movies that we produce. Yes for the disbeleivers we have a Genre of movies we are known for the world around. This Genre of movies is not very different from a Bond movie or a Good Bad Ugly. We make a Black, a Devdas, a RDB, a Dhoom 2 and an Agneepath (our own take on God Father) and have the biggest viewership of movies. We are a unique country where cinema is given such a status that Rajni is worshipped in a theater.
Let us realize that our movie stlye is different and not use Hollywood as a yardstick of what is absurd and what is not. With passage of time all movies look absurd. Did someone say 'Ten Commandments' looks absurd when seen today. May be it does, but then cinema is not about technology and reality all the time is it. Wouldnt we all be seeing Discovery channel in theaters instead.

And rediff, Agneepath absurd.. Please.. that can be avoided

We accept it all right. We accept that it is an assault on our senses and logic. We accept that it mirrors nothing about the society we live in or ask any profound questions about our country.
The point is, Good Bad and Ugly, Ten Commandments etc are movies made in the 50-60s. Our cinema is stuck in that era. Naseruddin Shah is absolutely right. Our movies are ridiculous. There's nothing to be proud of a literal family business where each person sucks up to the other family and creativity is non-existant.

Look at European cinema, Brazilian cinema, even hollywood (not superman/spiderman variety but like Godfather, shawshank redemption etc). Memento is a brilliant film with a very, very simple plot line that could be summed up in a para shorter that what I've typed here. And yet it is such a riveting film. Reason? Chris Nolan is a talented director. Cant say the same about the likes of Karan Johar and Yash Chopra.

Hey Kunal,
Which world do you live in. Do you actually know anything about india cinema?

All kapil is trying to tell you is that you cannot compare indian cinema with Hollywood they are different kind of cinema all to together.

And by the way Kapil is a Punjabi. As i said as you don't about indian cinema its looks like you also don't know about india. It will be very rare to find a sounth indian with a name Kapil
