a late but right decision
by abcd efg on Sep 03, 2008 12:29 AM   Permalink | Hide replies

Tata could have played a more proactive role by offering better incentives to farmers or by negotiating with them directly or withdrawn from the site voluntarily as good corporate ethics. However, it did not do so either out of Indira Gandhi era thinking or plain corporate irresponsibility. Nevertheless its a right decision, better late than never. India does not want a nano stained in the blood of its farmers. Its a lesson for politicians and corporates on what price India is ready to pay for development. We have to move ahead together taking everyone's interest in consideration.

Not sure if Tata was in the wrong here. There were apparently 13000 farmers impacted and only about 2200 or so that thought the goverment had not paid the appropriate price for the land they were forced to part with. The fact is they were all paid above the prevailing market rate for their land, though it's entirely possible that some genuinely believed their land was priceless and did not want to give it up at any cost.

Note that Tata did not buy the land (it's legally not allowed to). The government expropriated this land under the 1894 Land Acquisition Act. The transaction hence did not involve Tata at all.

At the end of the day, this could have generated billions of rupees in revenues and wages for West Bengal and, ironically, the very same farmers who may easily have found some gainful employment at the plant. WB's loss.

Tata did not construct Singur plant in the stain of blood of WB farmers. Farmers had sold their land for money as it is much beneficial them than doing agriculture in WB.

As WB already a third world state in India, the recent developments and growth will also come to a stop.

Let Mamta, left parties send out the Tata from WB and see whether any new industry comes up in WB.

Not even a patriotic and proud WB guy will open an industry in WB.

Politicians like Mamta Wants the people to be downtrodden, lazy and always remain in poor condition. So, that she can remain in power.
