What the heck? I think the guy posted this article must be part of Senior Management who talks subject without understanding it!
Throwing key words like Cheaper, Better, Portable, bla bla....
3G is one of the mobile standards where more spectrum efficient CDMA (WCDMA) technology is being used which can be used for mainly video telephony and high-speed data connections.
In India both these options are totally unwanted and not required for a normal mobile consumer because it will not be affordable in the first place!!!!
Let us first think about providing GPRS for the normal user at affordable cost; later they can talk about already outdated 3G.

In Tamilnadu Airtel, they offer unlimited GPRS at Rs.375 (including tax) per month. Is it not affordable cost for you?. Then you should go and beg.

Rs 375 is affordable for a common man!!! Plus, average monthly call charges Rs 350 will take the monthly bills close to Rs 700-800 per month! I am not sure if this is considered "normal" for a common man!

im sorry, you cant think only in terms of the pooerest. take a median you have a huge population of middle class and lower income groups who can pay rs. 375 occasionally if not every month, you can connect and disconnect as you like.

For middle and poor people it is of no use and they will not have infrastructure (medium-end to high end mobile phone, computer, etc) to use unlimited internet.
Still Rs.375 is affordable. Why can't you control call costs?. It is left to your hands and mouth only.
Funny instance : I asked Airtel Tamilnadu prepaid customer care when will they launch EDGE and 3G in my area and Tamilnadu. They asked what is it !!!!!!!. My god. What a technology illiteracy !!!!!!!!.

Mr. Senthil pls don't boast around. Not all areas serviced by Airtel has edge. Of course they have basic GPRS everywhere. They have high speed gprs(edge tachnology) only in selected areas. Same applies to Vodafone. Those Hutch networks (previously) in chennai already had Edge. BPL networks (tamilnadu) networks in small tier cities still doesn't have edge.

Edge network is already available in Metro's and some A class towns like Pondicherry and all tamilnadu district headquarters. It is up to your handset to have edge feature. Having Edge should drastically change the data transfer speed. But the service providers in India doesn't seem to give stable connection speeds.
I once found that my edge enabled Sony ericsson w810i connected to my laptop (AIRTEL MOBILE OFFICE)was downloading at the rate of 25 KB/sec... un belivable... But I couln't see that speed again. Normally the transfer speed would be 10 KB/sec
ps: I am talking about the DATA TRANSFER SPEED.. Don't mess around.
You are showing your technology illiteracy. EDGE is phone side technology to get better speed out of GPRS. In other words, EDGE speed was always available from Airtel side. You just got to check whether your phone supports EDGE.

Still Rs.375 is affordable (for prepaid customers). The same facility in postpaid is for Rs.600 per month in addition to plan charges, call and service tax on both !!!!!!!.
