Over-rated!
by Krishna on Jul 05, 2007 01:57 PM   Permalink | Hide replies

We all agree that IITs are very good institutions. But i somehow feel they are thoroughly over-rated and a brand is created out of it. Agreed. Very bright students get thru IIT-JEE. But that doesn't mean that they are only intelligent or bright people in the country of 1 billion people as these people make us believe. Intelligence kisi ek yaa kuch logon ga jaagir nahin hain. I hope it would be good for us to realise this as early as possible. IIT-JEE exam should be given importance to the extent of getting admission there. Not more than that. It is very insulting, as they too are qualified engineers!

I think we must take a look on the achievements of IIT and IIM alumni before branding IITs or IIMs as overrated.
I agree partly with Rajni that IITs or IIMs are not ranked within the overall list of top 100 universities of the world, but let me inform you that IITs as a group are ranked at number 3 in the world in a recent ranking done by the Times group after MIT and Stanford as far as engineering is concerned and this is a good indiacator of their brilliance. Moreover, Management education was introduced later in India than in US and other developed countries and keeping this in view, the rating of IIM-Ahmedabad , 63rd rank on the global level by the Times group is still commendable.
Leaving the rankings apart , we must look at the broader issue of how to improve the brilliance of IITs, IIMs and all institutes of higher education in India to upgrade them to a globally reputable level. You must be aware that the funding which IITs and IIMs receive from the centre is far less as compared to the endowment s/grants received by MIT , Stanford or a top Chinese university .So , we must make a collective effort to increase funding for these institutes so that they may engage in top class research and contribute papers in international Journals so that their ratings may increase at the global level.

u may be right about the funding part. and i am not bothered abt the ranking as well. But what i am saying is that just because u have cleared IIT-JEE exam and got a seat in IIT doesn't mean that u have a upper hand for the rest of your life over other people who got engg degrees from some of the good universities.(i am not talking abt such colleges or universities which are blacklisted or where the standard is below par). The person is branded as IITian for the rest of his life. Thats not fair. don't u think so?
