I think we must take a look on the achievements of IIT and IIM alumni before branding IITs or IIMs as overrated. I agree partly with Rajni that IITs or IIMs are not ranked within the overall list of top 100 universities of the world, but let me inform you that IITs as a group are ranked at number 3 in the world in a recent ranking done by the Times group after MIT and Stanford as far as engineering is concerned and this is a good indiacator of their brilliance. Moreover, Management education was introduced later in India than in US and other developed countries and keeping this in view, the rating of IIM-Ahmedabad , 63rd rank on the global level by the Times group is still commendable. Leaving the rankings apart , we must look at the broader issue of how to improve the brilliance of IITs, IIMs and all institutes of higher education in India to upgrade them to a globally reputable level. You must be aware that the funding which IITs and IIMs receive from the centre is far less as compared to the endowment s/grants received by MIT , Stanford or a top Chinese university .So , we must make a collective effort to increase funding for these institutes so that they may engage in top class research and contribute papers in international Journals so that their ratings may increase at the global level.
