1. "IIMs should be granted autonomy" It is easy to say that now. Let's not forget that 30-40 years ago the state (with citizens' money) created these great institutions, granted 100s of acres of prime land, lent them full financial assistance (which could have funded 100s of primary schools) etc. with the vision that the IIMs will remain rooted to social commitments. Now that the IIMs no longer need government support they can't simply wash off their hands. 2. "IIM grads walk out with offers of 40-50 lakhs, so let them take loans" By that logic, IIMs should be charging 10-15 lakhs as fees. Why are they subsidising it to 5-6 lakhs? Because of some social realities. Don't we know many banks refuse loans to the really needy ones if they don't have sufficient collateral?
I am not supporting reservations in the current form, but I feel the opposition to it is not well founded.

Were you on cocaine when you wrote this post ? The child has grown and has become bigger and smarter than the father. Nehru was a visionary who created these institute precisely to ensure they become engines of India's growth. Indian polity has been only on a decline ever since I would rather trust a drug lord than the human trafickers who rule the country today. These guys have not created anything new ( except for Golden quadrilateral project which Vajpayee thought of ) - and have only been trying to milk what has been for what it is worth. Men of straw in the government cannot hold a candle to most people who run the Indian industry today - with efficiency and created millions of jobs. The top 5 IT companies themselves have created 3 lakh jobs and will create another lakh in one year or so. And this industry prospered because no one in the government knew how to control it ... and some good leaders in south India like Krshna and Naidu were proactive.

You are wrong about the loans. The loans extended by banks for IIM students are collateral free. I know because I availed of them many years back. I graduated from the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad.
