5 Decisions
by Mukund on Aug 15, 2007 02:25 PM   Permalink | Hide replies

1st decision was 100% wrong. If they wanted to creat secular state, then concept of united India including Pakistan and Bangladesh would have saved a lot of money that all countries are spending in Defence, wars and could have been well utilized in building highway, dam etc.
2nd decision would not have been required.
3rd decision is O.K but not good. Instead of Globalization, GOI should have given more subsidies to then Industries and made export compulsory to them.
4th Decision was too late. If Necular option was exercised much earlier nearby Chinese tests, we would have been in UN security concil today.
5th decision is not yet clear and opinion of Nuclear sientists should be held final than decision by politicians.

Your comments are good. But it seems you are too carried away by emotions rather than ground reality.
1. Firstly India was never an united country before British power. It was a geographically connected group of several states ruled by Rajahs and Maharajahs and then by Sultans. The history is not really glorious. They fought with each other for power and cared little about foreign invasion. In fact, to them every other compititor state was foreign. Partition was forced on us and there was no way out without the willingness of all parties.
2. So, 2nd decision was necessary.
3. Subsidies...? Do you know country didn't have enough funds to run the nation for more than few weeks? Mr. Chandrashekhar had to put Gold into Bank of England's custody to run the country. Despite opposition, Dr. Manmohan Singh had to take tough decisions and full credit to PV Narsimha Rao for giving him political support although many Congress leaders thought otherwise.
4. Nuclear tests were not possible untill India had enough foreign reserves. In fact, economic liberalisation was bit too late.
5. In my opinion, we have to believe in Dr. Manmohan Singh. He was damn right when everyone opposed him. One cannot argue with the integrity of this man. The question is, does India need more nuclear weapons or technological assistance, econonomic benefits and diplomatic advantage. Scientists don't necessarily understand the international politics and the stratagic benefits.
