pet dogs or tigers?
by bluebie on Jun 14, 2007 01:38 AM   Permalink | Hide replies

tigers are not meant to live like dogs; what do they feed these tigers anyway? vegetables? I think that tigers should be allowed to live a normal life than humans making pets out of them; the most important thing is to protect the species and prevent poaching of tigers.

i feel this is the last chance to save the tigers from bieng extinct.... by letting it in the wild, you know very well what happens to them .... THEY ARE BIENG POACHED. Tigers are fed meat and not vegetables but the meat is without blood... If we cannot do anything for them, least we can do is to respect others who are struggling to SAVE THESE WONDERFUL CREATURS

i believe that poaching should be controlled. the tiger project started in the 70's was a huge success; why not do something of that sort? any animal looks best in its natural environment. i have heard of many americans keeping large carnivores like tigers and pumas as personal pets; would you agree to that as well in the name of conservation? also, what about zoos and circus, where they also keep wild animals? would that also be in the interest of conservation? the truth is that animals raised in this manner are helpless to fend for themselves if introduced back into their natural environment and mostly die. unless we permit wildlife to thrive where they belong, which is in the wild and give them conducive environment (no poaching or human intervention), not much will be achieved. Another thing is that such pet tigers when interbreeding will have such a closed gene pool that soon the offspring will start having genetic defects.

YOu had a smashing honeymoon, I am sure, and the tiger experience must have really made it that much more amazing. That is also the reason you will stoutly defend the position that it is better to have an obedient, dog-like tiger, than a dead tiger.

While these monks are doing their bit for conservation, I am sure, how do you think the tigers become obedient and tame? They are also smacked around a bit, which is not really all conservation, I think. While conservation is a fantastic thing, it is essentially about creating an environment that allows the animal to survive on its own, not creating a spiritual circus.

I completly agree with Meghana. People who write back that tigers are being kept as 'pet dogs' know little about whats happening globally. Its disheartening to know that some people cannot see beyond their own 'little' horizons. This monastry that Meghana and her husband visited has been covered on National Geographic a few months ago. It all began when a local poacher himself, killed the mother but found her cubs. Sita, Thunder and Storm - were the three cubs adopted by the monastry. Had they not adopted them from the poacher (who would have killed them eventually, thank God some good sense prevailed) these cubs would be dead long ago! So think before you guys speak. There's a lot more than a 9 to 5 job!

Hi amit,

i really appreciate your willingness to protect the beautiful animal. Instead of just debating over this topic, it would be better if we all come forward and contribute for the conservation of tiger, Iam sampath from Hyderabad and this is my id"sampath22@gmail.com". I would be very glad if i would be of any use in this mission.
