The story of a BUDDHIST country - Afghanistan
by sushmita on May 20, 2008 02:07 PM

The STORY:

Afghanistan was a peaceful BUDDHIST country in the before 13th century AD. Many monuments, such as the famous Buddhas of Bamyan that were destroyed by the Taliban testify to the Buddhist culture in Afghanistan. 'Gandhari' from the Hindu mythology is from Afghanistan.

Today, less than 0.1% of the country is Buddhist.

THE QUESTION:
WHICH RELIGION destroyed the peaceful BUDDHISM in Afghanistan ? (100 marks)
Choices: (Tick one only)
Hinduism. Christianity. Sikhism. Islam.
For the correct answer, scroll down.

Correct Answer for the above question:
ISLAM destroyed all traces of BUDDHISM in Afghanistan. Today, 99% or more of Afghanistan is ISLAMIC. BUDDHISM has been wiped out. Their statues have been destroyed over the centuries. The few that could not be destroyed fell a few years ago. Minorities like Buddhists, Christians and Hindus were identified by a compulsory yellow cloth and mark on their houses. Ethnic cleansing similar to what we saw in Kashmir with Kashmiri Pandits from 1989 onwards was seen in Afghanistan.
