RE:Congress vs Nuclear Deal
by ACM on Aug 01, 2008 12:02 AM

I agree that the deal is good for India no doubt about it especially when you consider the opposite. But you want to approach it clearly knowing that India can not test nuclear weapons without sufficient provocation (i.e. from China or Pak). i.e. India can not test nuclear weaponrey even on an experimental basis. If the scientists (as they claim) got it right first time, then this should be no concern for India because in any case, no one in the world is looking to test nuclear devices except Iran/North Korea type of countries of which North Korea seems to have abandoned its programme In any case North Korea and Iran are not a direct threat for India. If Pak or China begin to test then India has the moral right to test so the US or the NSG will not stop supply in such cases.

If India did more testing now, there would be severe economic consequences so they're not planning on doing it. In that sense, India got the 1998 timeframe right for the testing strategically speaking. At this moment in time, India is too dependent on world economy for it's survival and progress so it can not do the testing due to the consequences so why not make use of this situation.

If the welfare of India is primarily important, it's a no brainer - Nuke deal is good for India. This will also be important to find out in the open who are India's friends and enemies when it comes to NSG meeting voting.

We live in interesting times.
