The spirit of the Olympics which the author talks about is for the most part given way to a hideously competitive spirit of national sport participiation. It is this spirit which determines which country will host the Olympics. China thus lays claim by virtue of its medals tally and its nationally mobilised sports infrastructure along military lines.
