Its impossible
by Chhagan Bhujbad on Mar 05, 2007 10:50 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Its impossible that this might be the scheduele... unless all the teams play and depending upon the win/loss situation should be the schedule... otherwise if this was the schedule right from the beginning, then it would be unfair for the other teams to just play 3 matches... so what if a team like Kenya wins all the three matches???

chhagan this schedule is based on assuption that these teams go through to second round its not the schedule is fixed considering they (minnows) wll not make it to second round. if they do they will replace these team in second round.

Definition of Breaking News
by Kumar Vaidyanathan on Mar 05, 2007 10:45 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Earlier some quality news were appearing in these coloumns writen by persons like Prem Panicker etc., Nowadays Rediff is also following CNNIBN, NDTV, SUNTV etc., in giving even todays weather or train timings as "Breaking News". For viewers , readers . better skip those "Breaking News" instead of wasting your time

It's foolish
by mayur kulkarni on Mar 05, 2007 10:44 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

I don't understand who has written this article. I don't know whether he understands cricket. You assume that India is already into the Supereights then why have the minnows playing the world cup just to have fun..
If you already decide the teams that go to the Super eight then why play the round robins....

This is the foolish & idiotic article i have ever read.

Ridiculous!!
by Chiradeep Chhaya on Mar 05, 2007 10:39 PM  Permalink

The rediff staff is coming up with more ridiculous articles with the passing day. This is just a blatant ploy to attract visitors to its site. I visited the site to see what was breaking about the news, and I was shocked at the contents of this article. I think all they have on their staff is a bunch of buffoons and Kung-Fu losers writing about cricket.

Also more than the ICC, it is rediff that shows, by way of this article, just what it thinks of the other teams in the World Cup. As I write this, South Africa were 74/7, 130/8 and have recovered to 179/9 against Ireland - and this is the op ranked team in the world we're talking about.

Finally, go and drown in a mug of water for saying this "Now if the ICC could only tell us who will win the final, we could all get on with our lives.". You deserve neither to watch cricket nor write a word about it.

Shame on you rediff, and your poor pathetic writer of this article.

Can we then safely assume that you'll neither read the sports section of newspapers nor turn on your TV until the final is about to commence, and bet all your life's savings on India being one of the finalists?

its a goof!
by on Mar 05, 2007 10:31 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

ICC has only given the ranking based on the previous performance. It is ridiculus to say that lesser teams should not be included in the world cup. People say its waste of time.but its not. How ICC will develop cricket among lesser nations? this is the only way from their point if view and we have to respect that.

Will all Indians be happy if we get a backdoor entrance to a football world cup since we are minnows in football? Its the same feeling for the lesser nations in cricket and super powers should respect that. Kenya has beatn WI and Sl nefore..so did bangladesh beat pakistan in 1999 edition. Upset is always on the cards..so, i think this article is a goof!

ICC got it right, Rediff's got it wrong
by on Mar 05, 2007 10:31 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

ICC has used seeding (which refers to rankings BEFORE the tournament) to schedule the super eight matches which I think is a brilliant idea. It gives some idea to the thousands of people who are paying quite a bit to travel to the west indies about where they need to go to see their favorite teams.

At the same time this idea does NOT give any advantage to any team. If Bangladesh defeats India or SriLanka, they will advace to Super Eight. (i.e. Since SriLanka is B1 and India is B2 does not automatically make them advance). Also, if India finishes top of group B, they will carry forward the points earned against the other team qualifying from B. I.e. being B2 does not put them to any disadvantage.

This article is one of the most ludicrous I have seen by Rediff. Just trying to take advantage of a 'India Vs Pak' headline to get more clicks. Editors at Rediff please do not insult the intelligence of your readers.

And as a footnote, people please compare this world cup's format to the last 4 world cups and you will see that it is the best among them.

You are right friend.

In the 1983 WC Zimbabwe had defeated the Aussies & nearly defeated India.

Rediff should not publish this type of articles.

I too agree with you. In 2003 world cup there are lot many matches which are meanigless one-sided matches. The strategy followed in this worldcup will reduce all these kind of matches at super-eights level. Even the no. of matches played are also reduced. As super six strategy was a big flop ICC followed new method of super eight. Rediff dudes, Please go through the wisden edition of 2003 for more details.

I disagree with your view that being B2 does not put India to any disadvantage.

It might just. The first team they will meet in the Super 8 will be Aus, they will play them at a venue where A1 would be waiting having already have played a match. They will then play the next match against C1 after a gap of just 1 day.

Then they would have to go to Guyana where A2 (SA?) would have already played 2 matches and got familiar with ground, pitch etc.

B1's match schedule looks better.
