In 1975 World Cup against England, England rattled up 334 for four in 60 overs against India. And in reply Gavaskar made his infamous 36 not out in 60 overs. He played 174 balls hitting but a solitary boundary and India finished at a mocking 132 for two off 60 overs.
Gavaskar had differences with then Captian and this is the way he chose to make his point.
This shows how vindictive and mean he is, and Chappel not being his best of friend, now gets his attention.

don't try to knot the head and the tail. Here we are not discussing about Gavaskar batting but the Team India performance under the Chappel guidance and the BCCI decision to give him a consultant post. So talk with the same language

Infact mr Anthony u come ahead & be Indian Coach u know better than all these legends.
the same Gavaskar who was caught with unaccounted foreign currency in his locker, the same gavaskar who racially abused West Indians in "Sunny Days", the same Gavaskar who openly played politics in the Indian cricket team through the early eighties - why does this Gavaskar not then dare to take up the coaching job in Idian cricket? Because it's so easy to throw stones from the sidelines?
Its always fun to read your so called articles in the media. Needless to say that when you played for India, you played for your own record and teams victory was secondary. You were a fantastic cricketer scoring 100 runs in 300 balls. Its a fact that you scored your first one day century just before retirement and still you are called one of the greatest cricketers. What a shame! For horse race, one needs to coach horses, but if you are given bunch of donkeys [I mean the present Indian team], even a dumb man will know %u201CDonkeys will never become horses even if God coaches them%u201D So, Gavaskar let me stop with this. All I want to ask you is %u201CWhy dont you coach the Indian team since you are a greatest cricketer on earth?%u201D I know you are fit for nothing guy and but critizing others in the media for money.
The various replies to Gavaskar's article appear to be in bad taste. Never mind Gavaskar's qualifications (and one must try NOT to forget that he scored his runs against some of the best world class bowling), in his article, Sunil Gavaskar has merely pointed out some of the facts a) Indian cricket being on an upbeat mood when John Wright left, waiting to fight it out against Australia for the no. 1 rank in cricket and b) today's scenario where the team appears to be down in the dumps. Gavaskar has neither protected Tendulkar nor has he blamed any cricketer. He has merely stated the facts. It is also a fact that Greg Chappell's experiments with Irfan Pathan and others drew flak from many former 'greats' - Wasim Akram, Botham etc. These were Chappell's decision - apparently trying to run Indian cricket not like Zimbabwe but according to some other model which most of us failed to understand. The fact also remains, that whatever were Chappell's intentions, the score card at the end shows that his experiments failed - failed miserably actually. Added to that is also the fact, that instead of admitting with humility, that his experiments did not get the desired results, it was Greg Chapell who started pointing fingers through the media that the 'senior' players were behaving like 'Mafia'. Fact remains that whatever his credentials, Greg did not clik in India - and so Gavaskar has quite correctly questioned the reasonableness of offering the same person another job in this very sport in this very country. He has merely pointed out that Greg's record as a Coach is perhaps not one to be proud of - he has successfully reduced a strong Team India to its pathetic shadow in 2 yrs. Maybe the various people who have replied to Sunil Gavaskar's message will take the trouble to re-read his article for a better perspective.

Goutam,
Gavaskar's comments can be made by anybody and have been done umpteen times. They hardly serve the real purpose, to improve the state of affairs.
Frm a casual talk with a Bangla Deshi worker, I could feel that they knew India and Pakistan were easily beatable because the earlier difference never existed any more. They had beaten better teams and were hungry.
If Gavaskar is sincere, he can do more than justwords. Why can't he step forward and take up the challenge and prove Chappell wrong. A person of his experience and stature should go beyond words. Otherwise, it is just cheap publicity and scoring points

Ya anybody can comment, but BCCI will listen to those former captains and players only. Its the duty to guys to advice BCCI accordingly. You guy doesn't fell the harm which Chappel made - thats sad.

What Sunny saying is 100% true and facts which BCCI doesn't know or ignoring continously and thus resulted India to 6th ranking and humilation and now trying to dump further by giving him the consultant to NCA - that bull shit. I am proud atleast Sunny is there is raise his hands and talk something senisible and good for Indian cricket. IF ANY ONE OBJECTS THIS CAN NOT INDIAN

Do you really understand Cricket??? I totally agree to Gavaskar's Point of View. Specially the latter part where he mentioned about the indian team 2 years ago and now, team is scattered and needs a inspired leader, why not Gavaskar himself come in as a coach as recommended by Mr. Kapil Dev some time ago. Its long time you have been in comentrators cabin, comeout and show the world the charisma of Sunil Manohar Gavaskar. Make the best team with great individuals.
Sachin, Sourav, Sehwag, Harbhajan, Agarkar should be sent to behaviroal/attitude correctional centers along with Gavaskar, More, Dalmiya, Pawar, Vengsarkar, Shastri etc
It is just a waste of time to blame individuals. We have been beaten fair and square by teams and all our "super stars" looked very ordinary indeed. They lacked class when it mattered. Practically, the paupers gave the billionaires a run for the money and exposed them.
It is crystal clear that we have lost it on fast and seaming wickets. Sri Lanka and even Bangla Desh looked much more comfortable. Our batsman were like monkeys on hot bricks.
Unless we can prepare fast and seaming pitches, reality will always stare at us. Are we looking at the real issue or looking at individuals to put blame. I feel that we should take a dispassionate review and performance should only be the criteria.
Gavaskar can only point fingures without taking any active role. He knows which side of the bread is butter.
Please study how Sri Lanka has become world beaters from nothing within a short time. Their depth is so good that even a second eleven will perform better than our "super stars".
There goes this stinking mouth again! As long as Greg Chappel was in India, this snake called 'Gavaskar' was hiding and the moment Greg is outside this country, he is spitting venome. Gavaskar has all along been the greatest scourge of Indian cricket. When he was a player he was responsible for playing politics with the likes of Bedi, Mohinder Amarnath and Kapil Dev. Now again he is at it. Insatead of putting blame squarely on coach, why don't we read anything from him questioning the attitude of some ofthe players. Despite Tendulkar's consistent failures, let alone, this world cup, he had been asking Tendulkar to keep playing till WC 2011. Why can't he question Tendulkar? Was Greg wrong in questioning Tendulakr's attitude when despite repeated advise and instructions from the coach, Tendulkar did not want to play at any position other than opener? Shouldn't a player of Tendulkar's stature be willing to do anything for the team? Then the attitude of this guy called 'Sehwag'. It was reported in press that on one specific occasion during one test match in recently concluded test series in SA, one day before the day Sehwag was supposed to bat, Sehwag asked Greg to come to the nets in the morning at 6 am to get some practice. While Greg turned up with his assistant, our own beloved 'Veeru' was sleeping with his wife and later on when asked by Greg, he just replied with casualness 'I did not feel like it'. So what is wrong if Greg has questioned the attitude of these senior players. Why can't we just accept the fact that these are a bunch of spoiled brats who have been spoiled by too much money and the prostitutes of Bollywood (or shall I call Brothelwood).
And in the end, to the likes of Gavaskar and his stooges : now that our rotten political cricket system has gotten rid of Greg, can somebody show the enough guts and take charge and promise to the nation that 'come what may, when we go down under this year, we will win a series'
This is only for those guys who are writing hate about Mumbai and Marathas.
Mumbai rules indian cricket and has defeated everyone in their state. Max Ranji tropies and other national championships.
Even today Mumbai rules.
Sachin is greatest indian cricket has produced and arguably one of the best in world. Gavaskar was the greatest in his time.
If you are angry about this years WC result then thats understandable but donot show your illiterate comments here on Marathas or mumbai. Already Dalmiya was shown the great Maratha Jhatka.
And before speaking about maharastrians check out wikipedia for Maratha rule and see how rest of India was ruled by the Marathas from pujab to Bengal and Delhi to Karnataka. It was the Scindias (shindes) in North (UP, BIHAR) and Holkars in Centre (MP) and Gaekwad in Gujrat. Peshwas ruled upto present day Pakistan and upto bengal. Marathas are the only race to fight ISLAM and destroy the Mughal empire. Not even Rana pratap was able to fight with the Mughals.
Mumbai has been the hub and bread earner for many non Maharashtrian losers who came to mumbai. Who still stay in Mumbai and send money in their state and abuse mumbai..traitors.
We are way ahead in culture, liberalism and as a wholesome city than all you other cities put together. Mumbai is the most safest, cultured and caring city even after so many people from the country stay here. It would not have made possible without the great Maratha culture of adaptation with non marathas.
So next time before you open your dirty mouth, please come with facts writing against mumbai and Marathas.
