Thanks for a long breathing essay,i shd say!!!.
But i differ from your view, if a country doesn't have enough infra in cricket and the exposure of cricket in international era, can beat a team where the cricket is a releign how can u accept that!!!. if your are not showing ur anger , they could take it for granted, we are all doing all these opposition simply aganist their complacency and not to their skill or their mental prowness. We know they can but why they have failed and we shd insist that they shd not atleast in the next future!!!

Reasons of failure of team India.
by Indra Sengupta on Apr 04, 2007 07:25 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Reasons of failure of team India.

a)Cricket is a team game. If you remove the Captain mercilessly just when he started recovering from a bad patch with a predetermined plan. From one day, from test and then from the team altogether, you disturb the rythm of the team.
b)You with vengeance start serching for an alternative to a person who still has a few years of cricket left, then your intentions are clear. You do not think about cricket or the team, you just have a petty agenda of blocking somebody's chances of redemption, corrections and improvements.
c) This petty agenda gets you out of focus. All your energy is concentrated on a negative agenda. You can not see positive feel positive. In such a situation you can never be a role model. Other players canot accept you as a true leader.
d)You also are not consistent in your planning. You go on testing players till the eve of the cup. Instead of encouraging the players going through a bad patch, you abuse them and drop them. You try very mediocre players from the domestic circuit. Here also you do not bring in the most prolific run getters or most wicket taking bowlers from the domestic cicuit.
e) In a word you create an air of uncertainty among all the playerst-he old the new and the not so old.
f) In such a given situation you can not get the best from your team. All the members become shaky and uncertain.
g) You ruin the team in the process and your expection that players would give their best out of fear psychosis is a wrong theory.Negative incentive is not as rewarding as a positive incentive of appreciation from your coach or captain. " You didnt play? Okay never mind. Actually you should have done this or should not have done this. All right better luck next time, we are with you."
h) This is called team spirit. This is called man management.
I understand Chappel Rahul combination totally failed to consider this aspect of Indian cricket. They thought they would carry on experiments, drive out all legacies of the past captain and somehow put up a disjointed bunch of brilliant players who will perform for them.
This is never possible. The team spirit left by Saurav legacy continued in the first phase of Rahul Chappel era and won some matches.
It evaporated too soon. Too much of experiments and ulterior motive ruined the team and the resultant humiliation for a nation of 125 million followed.
This is clear logic. In the circumstances I see only one person standing above the rest to lead India for another two years required for grooming a new leader.
This interim Captaincy must go to Saurav Ganguly. Obstinates term me as regionally biased, but it is only a coincidence that he is also an Indian hailing from the East.

Age does not matter always. With age people lose many thing but gain far more. You are to weigh the pros and cons. It is not a quetion of emotions but hard logic and rality.
Can you discard Heden, McGrath, Jayasurya, Femming, and a host of other players if not Lara only because they are old?
Unless you groom your talents to be able to replace the old there is no point in saying remove the old.
My point is all the current players young old and not so old would have performed much better had there not been the accident called Rahul Chappel takeover and Gangly ouster.
I have a strong feeling out of my experience of studying people for at least 36 years since I attained maturity, Rahul is no captain material.
You keep him as captain and you will lose again and again and again.
Excuses are easy to find.
Sometimes you say your batsmen have let you down sometimes you say your seniors have let you down sometimes you say your middle order has collapsed sometimes you say that your bowlers did not bowl well sometimes you say you would have won if you could score another 30 runs and so on.
But this leads you no where.
You are to come as a real friend to your team mates.
You are to charge them to get the best of them.
You are to use your prudence in all departments of captaincy batting bowling field setting bowler changing batting order changing encouraging enthusing and so on.
Here Rahul lags far far behind.
God knows if he is kept you will see the difference. He will have to make way for new captain very soon because India shall never reach that height under Rahul that it achieved under Saurav.

the fielding aspect
by allwyn fernandes on Apr 04, 2007 07:13 AM  Permalink

Forget the batting and the bowling, just very good fielding can save 25-35 runs and get more wickets b%uFFFD of the pressure created on the batsmen. Its like having an extra batsmen and an extra bowler in the team. eg Australia,New Zealand, Sri Lanka. And the Indian team's fielding is pathetic to say the least. So in reality when India plays the above mentioned teams its 11players v/s 13 players. So who will win? So my suggestion is, for ODI only players with very good fielding abilities should be selected.Obviously they have to be good batsmen/bowler also.

Tendulkar and the other golden ducks in the team
by Sam Walton on Apr 04, 2007 06:56 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

It is high time that this boy wonder has to go. He may have records but in sports as in sales, every day is a new day. It is up to the sportsmen to perform or perish. That's why they are paid well. Greg is an Aussie and he will be blunt. That's how it is in many countries and sports is developed ina professional way. It is Ganguly and the boy wonder Tendulkar who smashed our world cup dreams. Ofcourse Pawar may be lenient to TendulKAR and hence the Indian cricket will suffer.

Go Chandra. Let us shakeup this Cricket board. Stupid idiots of BCCI and the record hungry cricketers who have no pride to play for the country..Sucj money hungry mongrels should be dumped in Arabian sea

Chappells panic room reactions were spotted by Benaud in this video....................
by bagal loru on Apr 04, 2007 06:56 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Chappells habit of behaving like a loser were visble cleary in this old video, where Benaud comments Chappells faulty counting of overs, which makes Trevor Chappell bowl the last over instead of Lille(some captaincy that!), but what is palpable is that Chappell behaves like a comman thug, to the annoyance of Geoff Marsh!

There is a clear pathological pattern in his behavior...........first msreading the game, then a immediate desire to rectify the mistake by cheating.........replayed many times over in the Indian dressing room, the last 2 years.

Here is the url in youtube............

Look Mr Lavakare - Do not try to be expert in evetrything
by sudip majumder on Apr 04, 2007 06:34 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

if you know the basics of leadership, basics of coaching , then you would write such columns. I am sorry. Chappel had a job to do. he failed at it. cricket is like anything else in life - a shade of grey. Ifit would have been a blue sky, then there is no requirement of coach. he gets paid to fix things which he failed. Apart from Yuvraj- nobody improved during his tenure. he tried his best with Pathan, Raina, Venugopal, VRV Singh and the record is there for everyone to see. Chappel's allegation might be true but the fact remains that he was one of the lousiest coach in the circuit with no proven credibility but surely one of the greates batsman in our times. Being great at some discipline does not automatically make one great at other related discipline as well - I am sure you are too matured to understand that. Greg failed and he should get a less royal kick. This is what is professionalism all about. Sorry - I have to remind you of that.

by vinta on Apr 04, 2007 06:52 AM  Permalink
Great observation Sudip.

To what extend do you blame players for not performing. What is important is took at what Greg wanted from players. Commitment and passion combined with two of three requirements.
Batting/Bowling
Running between the wickets
Fielding/catching.

These are fundamental in making a good team. Look at the world cup teams even countries such as Bangladesh, Ireland etc are better than us in atleast two out of above three departments.

Basics of coaching is creating a thought process. Players themselves have to absord this, adopt and perform.

Believe me we can never be a world class team without following the basics laid by Greg. We can be paper tigers based on numbers only. We will win Odd matches against good teams.

Its time for Chappel to Get Out
by dagal on Apr 04, 2007 06:20 AM  Permalink

Lot of time coaches may not get what they want. This is true with other countries too. But it is a coach job to identify the team's potential & strength to base their strategy. If a coach can get 5 Mcgraths,5 Richards and a Gilchrist he would not be finding a place to start with. Any tom and Harry can do the job. So if a coach is crying or blaming the team selection he is not fit to be in that high paid job. If you look at Indian team it is not all that Bad to start with, except for 1 or 2 players.

What Indian team lacked was THE PLAN which is Coach Responsibility, his only responsibility. Look at Bangladesh their game plan revolve around spinners. Srilanka stick to their basic plan of using Vaas and Murli. All the others players are very mediocre. But still they have plan to win matches.

Another problem for the Indian Captain and coach is, instead of spending time to look at opposition's stregnth and weakness they spend too much time in team selection before the matches. I guess the night before the match and the morning Dravid and Greg would pull their hair to make decision on the team selection. Who should open shewag and robin or Tendulkar and ganguly or ganguly and Sheweg etc..who should come 1 down....whether to go with 4 bowler or 6 batsman..should it be Kumble or Harbajan..Can pathan be that allrounder......Common no other team has such confusion before the match. Interestingly whom ever they choose over the other will not perform. The above looks minor but we have to fix this first. There should be 11 players who should automatically get picked and know what their downs and responsibility are. Example...every other team except India.

Similarly the plan should be to attack the entire opposition not just to restrict Jayasurya or how to defend Murli. Time and again we make so many new heros in the opposition. We cannot count the number of Pakistan players who have proved just against India and vanished in the air. We should try and plan to attack the entire pack, which seems to be not the case right now.

I believe cricket like football has its own units within the team. There should be a batting (offense) leader and there should be a bowling leader (defense). We all know our offense leader..but who is our bowling leader that our young bowling team can look up to? Agarkar..uh..so how are we planning to win matches. So the next coach better be a bowler. I guess we have not had one in a long time.

Another option India have is to appoint some of the IT CEO's such as Narayana Murthy. The Indian CEO's know how to tap and get the work done with the limited potential and resource. They have done it with Indian IT sector and can do it with Indian team. We just have to hope they don't outsource the team....

INDIA WILL LOVE SACHIN FOR THIS
by anurag rai on Apr 04, 2007 05:22 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

I Just want to say thank you very much Sachin...this is the best thing you ever did to save India....First it was Ganguly who went against Chappel and NOW its Sachin......we love u for telling the truth.....

Most Indians will feel ashamed because they betrayed Ganguly and went with Chappel & Dravid...

Ganguly was right about Chappel....but it took us 2 years ....a world cup exit and many defeats to understand that.........CHAPPEL AND DRAVID ARE PATHETIC...

In a statement that is likely to have a large bearing on the immediate future of Indian cricket, Sachin Tendulkar has revealed that India's cricketers would be most disappointed with Greg Chappell, the coach, if he questioned their attitude.

In a rare public outburst, Tendulkar, not known to air his views on controversial issues, expressed his anguish. " Paani sar se ooncha ho gaya hai (Things have gone a bit too far to keep quiet). I've given my heart and my soul for 17 years. No coach had mentioned even in passing that my attitude was not correct," Tendulkar told Times of India. "Cricket has been my life for all these years and will always be."

His statements come in the wake of reports that many members in the team have rallied together against Chappell and Dravid and want Tendulkar to take up their case to the board. Cricinfo had reported on the crisis in the team , one largely owing to the rift between Chappell and the senior players, and Tendulkar's statements reinforce the players' stance.

"Tell me, the world has gone on talking about all this [our defeat and exit] but has anybody spared a thought for us?," asked an emotional Tendulkar. "Did they try to find out what we have been going through? I am shattered beyond words and I feel helpless. I've never felt so bad in my entire career ... The World Cup was our passion, our collective goal, our dream and that has been shattered

"I am shattered beyond words and I feel helpless. I've never felt so bad in my entire career." he said. "No matter how many Tests or one-day series you win, nothing else even comes close to a World Cup triumph. The World Cup was our passion, our collective goal, our dream and that has been shattered. And we all are terribly disappointed over it."

Tendulkar took responsibility for the World Cup debacle but responded to what he perceived as a slight to his commitment. "Again, it's not that we are defending ourselves. We do realise that we played badly and, as a team, we take full responsibility for that. But what hurt us most is if the coach has questioned our attitude."

The Indian board's working committee meets on April 7, following the meeting of the review committee the day before. It is expected that Chappell's report, due to be submitted to the board before April 6, will be scathing in its criticism of the attitude of the senior players including Sourav Ganguly, Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag and Harbhajan Singh. The working committee meeting will be attended by BCCI's office-bearers and seven former captains, including Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev, Ravi Shastri and S Venkatraghavan.

Ganguly, Tendulkar, Harbhajan and Sehwag need to go. We don't need stars in the team who hardly perform. Look at the New Zealand team that does so well without having any high profile stars. Dravid performed well against Sri Lanka and if not for him we may not have crossed 100 that day.

Is that a necessary prerequisite to criticize Dravid-Chappel? By the way Im not the one you are thinking about. Yet I feel bad when you guys get a divine pleasure in denigrating each others region and vernacular. In the pre-independence era Churchill said giving freedom to Indians will enhance their ability to kill each others like savages. I do not think you guys are any better than that. What time is it now in India? I guess morning! Better start the day fresh and try to do something good.
