Its time for Chappel to Get Out
by dagal on Apr 04, 2007 06:20 AM

Lot of time coaches may not get what they want. This is true with other countries too. But it is a coach job to identify the team's potential & strength to base their strategy. If a coach can get 5 Mcgraths,5 Richards and a Gilchrist he would not be finding a place to start with. Any tom and Harry can do the job. So if a coach is crying or blaming the team selection he is not fit to be in that high paid job. If you look at Indian team it is not all that Bad to start with, except for 1 or 2 players.

What Indian team lacked was THE PLAN which is Coach Responsibility, his only responsibility. Look at Bangladesh their game plan revolve around spinners. Srilanka stick to their basic plan of using Vaas and Murli. All the others players are very mediocre. But still they have plan to win matches.

Another problem for the Indian Captain and coach is, instead of spending time to look at opposition's stregnth and weakness they spend too much time in team selection before the matches. I guess the night before the match and the morning Dravid and Greg would pull their hair to make decision on the team selection. Who should open shewag and robin or Tendulkar and ganguly or ganguly and Sheweg etc..who should come 1 down....whether to go with 4 bowler or 6 batsman..should it be Kumble or Harbajan..Can pathan be that allrounder......Common no other team has such confusion before the match. Interestingly whom ever they choose over the other will not perform. The above looks minor but we have to fix this first. There should be 11 players who should automatically get picked and know what their downs and responsibility are. Example...every other team except India.

Similarly the plan should be to attack the entire opposition not just to restrict Jayasurya or how to defend Murli. Time and again we make so many new heros in the opposition. We cannot count the number of Pakistan players who have proved just against India and vanished in the air. We should try and plan to attack the entire pack, which seems to be not the case right now.

I believe cricket like football has its own units within the team. There should be a batting (offense) leader and there should be a bowling leader (defense). We all know our offense leader..but who is our bowling leader that our young bowling team can look up to? Agarkar..uh..so how are we planning to win matches. So the next coach better be a bowler. I guess we have not had one in a long time.

Another option India have is to appoint some of the IT CEO's such as Narayana Murthy. The Indian CEO's know how to tap and get the work done with the limited potential and resource. They have done it with Indian IT sector and can do it with Indian team. We just have to hope they don't outsource the team....
