An unfortunate comparison
by vinayak kamath on Aug 05, 2008 09:22 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Everytime we attempt at understanding the reasons for failing at major sporting events other than cricket - we have a bad habit of taking potshots at cricketers the fans and the sport as a whole. What is wrong if the authorities of a particular sport have better managed and marketed a sport when the others have been busy in getting themselves involved in one scandal after the other.

I myself used to play football. Comparing the way in which the game is being managed at the grass roots itself can answer a lot of our questions concerning our failure to sparkle at the olympics or to even manage to break into the FIFA top 100.

Kindly refrain from abusing a sport in sheer frustration of our current inability to perform better in other sports - most when you face lack of ideas to explain "the tales that our medals tell"

well, talking about grassroots, it will come back to the people, we are the one who elect our government. why do we elect people who havent even passed high school , and have been linked with criminals. How can you expect a country to progress when the well learned IAS officers have a minister who has not even passed school above him

Why should Tax payers Money go on feeding athletes and sportsmen, who cares if we get/dont get medals...Indians are matured enough to understand that its waste of time and money for a developing country to spend money on winning medals. Better to focus on education as means of wealth creation...

Dude we had a tv report here before sometime in which a punjabi wrestler said how he is ill treated by Indian officials and he just got sick of it... in the end he migrated to Oz and now he is representing Aussies at this olympics... now when he wins a medal m sure all media will hail as victory to India.. Ha

Hi,
Winning spirit can create wonders in people so that they can do other things better. If one Indian tops the world in "Athletic" for example, definetly It will inspire me to achive..I think its same with other people too...except you!!...think back and correct your attitude...

Good article
by PANKAJ SHARMA on Aug 05, 2008 08:45 AM  Permalink

I agree. its the whole system that does not think it is important to compete. we are not competetitive basically. Always look for easy things in life. Why comptete. How does it matter if don't win at olympics, or even if we don't qualify for a sport that we were undisputed champions. It is a shame.

Don't get worked up too much
by Jatin Desai on Aug 05, 2008 08:39 AM  Permalink

You cannot compare china &India. Two different model will produce different set of results.

Even if you find talent , you won't be able to push the talent to the limits as rights of individuals will have to be repsected.

Look at Sania ... she did very well by reaching 4 th round of US open & play Top seed in 2005... Obviously she will continue to play her natural game. ( Which is to enjoy hitting ball)
we have to respect that & hope it will bring a Grad slam one day.

by Shiv Dholakia on Aug 05, 2008 08:37 AM  Permalink

man, it is this winning and super competitive attitude of americans that have made them care jack shit about anyone else in the world. life isn't all about winning...there will always be someone better or worse than you. winning is a relative term. no matter who you are , you are gonna die someday like any other human being. this is not a reason to perform badly, but try your best and leave the rest to god. i personally, like to love what i do, i could care less about being 'better' than other. screw this whole competition nonsense. it has made people forget their true selves.

just enjoy the adventure of life man.

cheers,
SD :)

We need to setup 12 IISAs all over India.
by Vishnu Sharma on Aug 05, 2008 08:31 AM  Permalink

IISA is Indian Institute for Sports and athletics

The sole goal of the IISA is to identify, enroll, and coach future olympic athletes and GOLD MEDALISTS in every sport that is there in the Olympics.
Also former Alumni of the IISA will serve as coaches for the next generation.

Unless this is done we cannot have a concentrated or systematic approach.

Those selected to the IISA will be the cream of sporting talent in the country in the same way IITs are the portals to the cream of intellectual talent.

These IISAs need all major companies in India to sponsor them and make them world class sporting facilities where the best athletes in the country compete with each other in world class facilities.

This can be done and the SPORTS ministry needs to take an initiative into this.

The initial investment will come to 25 billion rupees. Unless you set aside this money and build facilities, select the very best and nurture that talent in the very best and varied sporting environments we will continue to have a pathetic show at every Olympics while other nations steal a march over us.

To those who say Indians are weak for sports
by Mihir Samel on Aug 05, 2008 05:18 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

We in India have so many martial races viz. Sikhs, Gurkhas , marathas , etc from all regions of the country . They all their glorious history of fighting & winning pitched battles against the most formidable enemies . Now you want us to believe that a nation that is strong enough to fight & win gruesome battles does not have the fitness to compete in athletic events???? common!!!! gimme a break .Thats a defeatist mentality at its best

I agree with the author. We have won wars, but when it comes to sports, we are losers always hiding behind good sportsman spirit. There is no excuse for our field hockey team to not be able to even qualify for Olypics other than bad administration and no hunger to be the best. Same is tennis. How many junior champions we produced, but none of them could go on to be a World number 10 - forget abt 1. its a shame for us as a nation that represnt 1/7 of all humanity.

dude, first and foremost , it is not the fault of our atheletes, im in no way sayin that they dont lack killer instinct, they definately do but its becuase of the facilities we are providing them, im now living in new zealand after living 22 years in india..the quality of facilities that new zealand provides even to 3 and 4 year olds is phenomenal , 500 acre grounds with courts and trainers for free to teach young kids, with flood lights to play at night , and every sport gets the same treatement, rugby is like the life and blood of new zealand but the facilities for cricket are so phenomenal its like a lords stadium for every school to practice on, and all this is done by the government, secondly we are a country raised on vegetarian food which quite frankly 90% of the world doesnt eat, every culture is raised on meat eating and excercise which doesnt apply in india, every animal and every human being is god and goddess for us so we practically rule out all sorts of food which is necessary for atheletic performance, take jains for eg , they dont even eat food grown underground like onions and potatoes, i really dont know what they live on to be honest, dont blame our atheletes , blame the politicians who mint the money expensed by government for atheletes and fill their swiss accounts with that money, i totally support our atheletes and after coming to nz i realised what a crap load of s*#$ we are brought up on in our great country with the s&*&^ people
