Sania ...long way to go!!!
by Namy on Sep 06, 2005 08:13 AM  Permalink

We have to give credit to Sania Mirza for making it in the world tennis circuit, but what I fail to understand is her off the court statements like the one she made after loosing to Maria Sharapova "I can match the best..!!!"

Hey! Sania you still haven't defeated the big names in the circuit in any of the grand slam rounds forget about winning one....and making such commments does not suit you. One must be humble as one climbs the ladder and not to forget action speaks louder than words. Remember always under promise and over deliver!!!!

sharapova is hot!
by sdfh on Sep 05, 2005 11:01 PM  Permalink

After watching Sania play, I felt that she could become a top 20 or top 30 player but that's it. She doesn't have the game to beat the best. If she drastically improves her serves, holds her nerves and moves better on court she might be a top 15 player. She just hasn't got enough firepower to beat Sharapova. If she goes for more, Sania's bound to have more unforced errors. Unlike her, Sharapova on the other hand is more solid. She is bigger, stronger, has an excellent serve with brilliant groundstrokes. At the same time since Sharapova is such a good mover on the court she can also run a few balls down and play a defensive game as well. Probably's that's why she's no 1. Oops and I almost forgot....Sharapova is soooo hot as well!

Congrats...Sania
by Anji on Sep 05, 2005 10:37 PM  Permalink

My hearty congrats to Sania, made us proud by becoming the Indian woman to enter into 4th round of US Open. But the way she has played against Sharapova was disappointing. All the first serves are alomost fault everytime. I wish she learn from her mistakes and will soon make it it Top10. Good luck Sania.........once again keep going

wateched this game. If that is how you play in 4th round of slam, you do not belong there. It is so obvious that she is besically wants to best in India , no interest in fighting and beating the best in slams. She knows most expect her to lose then why work hard. PR and Ad contracts are not going change, so strategy is to stay around top 50, be first indian in 4th round. At 18 many others have done wonders, tracy austin, maria sherpova and others. She was lucky not encounter a top 3ier rounds otherwise she would be gone in 2nd only. she has so so tennis, more focus on image building(t shirts show it).I doubt with this attitude, she can become Maria( grreat personality, attitude and tennis). She is doing what Anna Kornikova did, never won any good title, used tennis to get Ads.
What a waste!!.
Lessons: you cannot hit winners when you do not control
the court. Cut 1st serveto 100, get it in. DF 1/set only.

Modesty missing
by Sumit on Sep 05, 2005 05:43 PM  Permalink

Hi - somehow on reading this article as well as lot of previous text written about Sania does not inspire adulation- the modesty element seems so grossly missing. We should all be proud that she has reached 42nd rank in ATP circuit and that she is improving but then trying to justify a dismal loss as saying that the fans should accept the way she plays does not augur well for Sania widely regarded as the role model for youth in India. She could have attempted to draw vital lessons from her loss to Sharapova rather than justifying the way she played. This would have shown her maturity and also reinforce the fact that she is in a learning curve and is trying to learn. As a stark contrast, Sharapova is her post match conference praised Sania by saying that she has been championing the cause of tennis in her country. That is what we call graceful winner (and we must remember Sharapova is 6 months younger to Sania).
All I can say at the end is that sania should keep trying hard but realise the fact that she should serve as a role model for the game in her country.

Dear Young Warrior, Sania !
by surekha tenneti venugopal on Sep 05, 2005 03:57 PM  Permalink

Yes, indeed, our dear young warrior- Sania Girl- as you rightly said, just keep playing your natural shots- there is no doubt they look terrific, and also intimidating. Maria Sharapova was often intimidated by your speed-returns.. actually you looked absolutely cool.
There is little doubt that you're a sure-fire winner. 50 unforced errors with 50 winners can well be the mantra to being No.1 !
BUT, young warrior girl, come on, stop making those serve-double-faults. The Sharapova girl won because of your serve-faults; otherwise your game was, I feel, better. For Sharapova is no Monica Seles ; she's no Steffi Graf either, the 2 most incandescent players of all time.
Anyway, within the year I feel you may be electrifying the Wimbledon big gals and big dads. With a powerful serve, you may well be the next Champion,'06 !
And yes, pretty woman, Sharukh is right- plese go slow on your endorsements.

Sania we love you
by DSK Rao on Sep 05, 2005 03:28 PM  Permalink

Sania is a pleasant change in the Women's circuit. Coming from Hyderabad , where I stay , I am proud to see her gusty approach and am sure she would win with the 'Fire' & 'Confidence' she naturally possess. I can only say 'Sania we love you' and you have our best wishes.
