booth capturing
by deepak singh on May 20, 2008 10:14 AM  Permalink

I remember at age of 11 years, almost 20 years ago,one of my school classmate gave 25 votes in one go and polling agent standing next to him. That was in some remote village in Bihar. That was a moment of pride for my young friend, not realising that we were not even qualified to cast the vote. This has been the way of polling for many decades..be it Bihar,WB,UP..or almost all rural belt across India..primarily voting seems to be done by systematic booth capturing, done by whoever is the dominant community in that region.EC can do very little to stop this unless people dont understand the value of their voting power. about it becasue

REDs vs RSS

REDs corruption are being exposed. Their alliance with B'desh Islamists are well known. Centre must intervene and dismiss the CPM governemnt. Atleast it will take two terms President Rule to clean the dirt.

first hand account.........contd
by vikram dutta on May 19, 2008 06:34 PM  Permalink

yet to arrive. infact they arrived at 11-30 pm. the bus started, we reached our center and by jove! within next 1/2 hrs we had done with all our submissions.
my take is that on most of the cases the complecations arise because the officers are unable to handle the situations. it becomes graver when the officers themselves start taking one or the other side.
yes i was appaled that the situation in so many villages is so dim.
but never the less, despite all hassels, it was agood experience.

first hand account
by vikram dutta on May 19, 2008 06:29 PM  Permalink

hi, i was delegated to work as a presiding officer in one of the booth in 24pgs WB. let me tell my story.
my first obstacle came when i found out that one of my polling officer had not turned up. it took me 4 hrs and a literate threat that it was administration's duty to provide me with an alternative person that i was finally given a person.
the next hurdel was the transport, i along with my party members waited patiently until 5-30 pm when the other two party could assemble. finally we were on our way. the bus took us on a 2hrs journey to the outskirts of the sunderbans. from here the bus would go no more. there was simply no road. my party still had some more distance to go. so we hired a mechanised van (bhatbhoti). that took us along the bumpy road for next 1/2 hrs. ofcourse charging us 3times the normal fare.
finally when we reached, it was a place just as described above. there was no electricity, infact you couldnot close the doors from inside. and we reached after darkness. we arranged for some kerosin and hired a lamp (hajak). and wenton with our paper works.
strangely as it may sound, the election went on very smooth. so much so not a single challengerd vote or tendered (when someone else has voted for you) vote happened.i had about 900 voters and there was 93% turnout. but the entire process was compleasted by 6-30.
our ordeal started after the poll, as we returned back to the bus, we found out that the other two party who had much less voters were yet to

Doubtful ...
by Siddharth on May 19, 2008 06:10 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

What has been claimed in the story is entirely possible. In fact, this is somewhat tame compared to what actually happens during elections. Much worse things usually happen, which will put any Indian to shame.

But there are a few doubts that are raised by this :

1) Usually the polling officers of panchayat elections are primary school teachers. I doubt any of them can write a report like this in a reporter like language. If its a translated story, rediff should come up with the name of the translator and the original writer.

2) What is the exact location of the place where this is taking place ? Why is this such a secret ?

3) What are the credentials of the writer. And why should we trust whatever he says without any semblence of proof.

This is not to say that the elections have been free and fair. Far from it.

But this actually amounts to fake journalism for which Rediff is famous.
