I suspect they are just extorsionist moneymakers, another group of politicians, using the bullet rather than the ballot for making money. When they make enough money to be able meet election expenses, they may become regular politicians, like pracanda of nepal.
Real answer is to make elections less expensive for the candidates, the EC should organize dozens of debate meetings among candidates in all constituencies, at which they can explain their views and people can compare their concerns and capabilities. Limiting election expense legally is artificial. Any committed citizen as candidate should be enabled to give his views to the electorate, without having to spend money inn the process. Local-body elections should coincide with central elections all over country, to bring grass-roots problems to the notice of central govt aspirants. State level dynastics and corruption will get exposed. Eventually, state govts can wither away. 1000 districts and 100 citicies can be directly governed evenly governed electronically from the centre, with pipeline-losses in delivery of benefits to the common man minimized.

Dangers of Ignoring the Poor
by Sajal Paul on May 02, 2008 05:39 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

I have read the article but the reasons has not been elaborated. I don't know whom to blame for this. The Parliament has not been able to enact Family Planning Act(We two our two). The population is increasing but cultivable land is not increasing substantially. Rather they are now being taken by rich corporate groups in the name of globalisation and Industrialisation.

Secondly, there are some people (heads among the poor community) who advises their community members not to adopt family methods as that would make them minority in the near future.

Its a pathetic situation where the representatives are not thinking of the future of India but doing cheap politics to get votes. One day their great-grandsons/daughters will face such situations where it will be impossible to venture out from their house. People will grab hold of the rich and kill and loot their properties. I foresee the future to be this way.

I want to write much more but I think that will make no difference.END>

Unfortunate Ideas

"The shameless way wealth is flaunted is extraordinary"

In most cases, wealth doesn't fall from the sky. Statements like these will only encourage people (like those who would prefer to count on reservations than to work hard) to believe that wealth comes free to those who have it.

Anyway, I think hard-working affluent people too should take a lesson from books and statements like these. It means that when the work you do is not acknowledged, when you are surrounded by people who want a piece of the pie without working for it, then the time is ripe for you to find greener pastures, where your hard work will be acknowledged and where your opinion will matter to the powers that be. Though you may have worked hard all your life for the good of society and the country, when the doomsday that is predicted in this book arrives, it is you who will burn first at the stake.

whew! thank god there are people like you out there who understand that what men like Adiga vaguely hint at sound a death-knell to hardwork, initiative and wealth-creation. I was getting discouraged on seeing a lot of emotional arguments for "take it from one man and give to the another man who does not want to work for it" ... The focus should be on finding ways to assist the have-not work for his bread rather than kill the golden goose by redistributing wealth earned through hardwork and initiative.

It is said that ' a pen has a strength of a sword'. All I can say that we need such (like Mr. Adiga) 1000 more authors/writers, rather I would call then thinkers who should generate 'REVOLUTION' TO SAVE OUR CULTURE, HUMANITY AND GOODNESS. Educate people and have HONEST leaders in politics we , the INDIANS would be the BEST lot in the WORLD.

I haven't read the book. But from the above interview what I understood is the author is just highlighting how the master-slave relations are surviving in India and why the violence. But does not discuss how to end it. Its not any enlightening article.
Even if you have a million of such authors.. each one will be a millionaire selling the book on poor...

Writing and debating does not solve problems. Writing and bringing about the issues is like, "See we have taken the trouble of bringing out the issues. Now someone please do the footwork and the dirty work". And those who do the actual work, their names dont figure anywhere.

Why should there be always "SomeBody"... why can't that somebody be YOU.
Even the poor think the same way. They are just waiting for that someone to change their lives...
As long as this wait continues the poverty also continues....
