Respect regional culture & balance the interests of communities
by Astute Analyst on Mar 19, 2008 07:10 PM  Permalink

I agree that the overlord attitude by the rulers in Delhi has contributed to the growth of Maharashtrian sub-nationalism. Had 1956 linguistic organization been handled fairly in Bombay, Maharashtrians would not have developed suspicions about the motive of North Indians whom they associate with the ruling elite in Delhi. Accommodation of the regional aspirations and the respect of cultural/ historical icons of each regional community is essential for the unity and integrity of India -Marathas, Rajputs, Sikhs, Jats. Shivaji, Rana Pratap, Guru Gobind Singh & Suraj Mal are respected icons of these communities. While writing history, one must keep the sensitivity in mind. Similarly, it is fine to argue in theory that any Indian can go anywhere for job. But in reality the demographic changes in the neighbourhood disturb the equilibria and any such unsettling process has to be dealt very carefully by balancing the interests of immigrants with the pre-existing residents of a place.

Provincialism: Problems of Mumbai
by Vishwamitra Singh on Mar 19, 2008 07:08 PM  Permalink

Dear Colonel Dr Anil Athale (retired). You are somewhere near to the periphery of the problem but has hesitated to be branded as Marathi Chauvenist an hence hesitated to hit the nail on its head. I am a North Indian and has no qualms in saying that the means adopted by Raj Thackrey and MNS may not be justified at the very outset but the opposition en-mass Migration from Bihar and Eastern UP is correct. there are many issues which needs to be addressed. What the consitution stated 60 years back on the basis of restricted franchise may not be true for all times.
To shorten the story due to space restriction, we have to make the smaller state of comparable size so that no state has over leaverage in national politics and thus try to influence national policies.
National Structure has to become more Fedral with sttates with more autonomy.
Migration of skilled labour and non-skilled labour to be regulated so that all states work hard to create employment for their people. It will help to create the all round development through out the country rather than in pockets. It will also control illigal migration from country like Bangla Desh which has become threat to national security. It will also make these politician accountable to the people.
We will have to give real democracy to the people rather than having pseudo or apparent democracy.
Present set up of governance is threat to national security.
Last but the least farmers in maharashtra will not commit suicide if they have

Maratha's
by Manoj Gharat on Mar 19, 2008 07:01 PM  Permalink

The Maratha Empire was at its height in the 18th century under Shahu and the Peshwa Baji Rao I. Losses at the Third Battle of Panipat in 1761 suspended further expansion of the empire and reduced the power of the Peshwas. In 1761, after severe losses in the Panipat war, the Peshwas lost control of the Kingdom. Many sardars like Shinde, Holkar, Gayakwad, PantPratinidhi, Bhosale of Nagpur, Pandit of Bhor, Patwardhan, and Newalkar became kings in their respective regions. The empire gave way to a loose Confederacy, with political power resting in a 'pentarchy' of five mostly Maratha dynasties: the Peshwas of Pune; the Sindhias (originally "Shindes") of Malwa and Gwalior; the Holkars of Indore; the Bhonsles of Nagpur; and the Gaekwads of Baroda. A rivalry between the Sindhia and Holkar dominated the confederation's affairs into the early 19th century, as did the clashes with the British and the British East India Company in the three Anglo-Maratha wars. In the Third Anglo-Maratha War, the last Peshwa, Baji Rao II, was defeated by the British in 1818. Most of the former Maratha Empire was absorbed by British India, although some of the Maratha states persisted as quasi-independent princely states until India became independent in 1947.

'Second' Bajirao Peshwa - 1795 to 1802

'Second' Bajirao Peshwa - 1795 to 1802
Raghunathrao died in 1782, leaving behind him, two sons; Bajirao, who in 1817 confronted the British at the Battle of Kirkee, in Pune; and the younger, Chimnaji Appa. Bajirao became the next Peshwa after Madhaorao's death. Nana was still the administrator and the Peshwai remained in stable condition till his death owing to his superb administrative skills. Nana died in 1800 and Pune fell into the hands of the Sindia's ( Shinde) ; the former chiefs of Nana's army. They remained in power for a short while and in 1802, Bajirao reestablished himself in Pune, by signing the treaty of Bassein with the British. This essentially ended Peshwai , establishing British supremacy in the region. The capturing of the Ahmednagar fort in 1803, proved British supremacy in the Deccan. In 1804, General Wellesly proclaimed the Deccan in a state of chaos, established military rule and the Peshwas remained rulers for name's sake.

CAN ANY ONE TELL ME WHEN MARTHI FOUGHT AGAIST BRITISH???

The first ango-maratha war from 1775-82 ended in a stalemate with an upper hand for Marathas. In reaction to the treaty of Vasai, the Shindes and Bhosales fought against British. In the third anglo-maratha war Marathas led by Sardar Bapu Gokhale fought against British forces. Finally, in 1857, Nanasaheb Peshve and Tatya Tope fought in Kanpur against a dominant British army. Maratheshahi was a medieval power but it was the biggest hurdle between the British ambition to conquer India and the actual conquest.

Marathas have fought British from Shivaji onwards. Even when Peshwai came to an end, the remenents of earstwhile Maratha states fought the British. Rani Laxmibai & Tyata Tope were basically Marathi speaking people.
Actually Maratha's did greater service to the nation by fighting Muslim Invaders than fighting the British, but just to keep to keep the records straight I have added this information.

You are criticizing channels of proking proviciallism. I think one needs to do a thorogh check at your article as well. What is the logic in emphasizing - what maratha warriors have done here. Wjat is the need now or what are you trying to convey at this time? What is logic in saying why is a bihari taking up a railway exam in mumbai? Dear Writer needs to understand one thing that not everybody gets a cnhance to join railways by money-means. There are a talented lot sitting overthere in bihar and burning midnight oil. If you do not agree then probably you do not know the realities there. It is only because there is not much of opportunity to earn a decent livingthere due to their own politicians, but that in no way stops them to attend exams in maharashtra? Can you please tell me why are supporting their being beaten up? The problem with you people is that you people are no longer competetive enough.....just see mumbai....most of the higher authorities in private sector are non-mahrashtrian!! You people do not drive taxis.....why?? Why the no of students in IIT mumbai, AIIMS, IMS or top premier colleges from maharashtra are less. First of all be competetive and then judge things.
just think before writing such article.....there could be many ways your ideology can be criticized

truth behind regionalism
by Dangerous on Mar 19, 2008 06:40 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

It is human nature to suppress fellow human beings...Upper caste people kept torturing for many centuries nd when Indian constitution provided them resrevation suddenly everything took u turn...The people who use to polish the shoes of upper castes were now sharing tea with them...This took a long time for everyone to go down the throat... the migratnts from UP,Bihar r facing a similar situation...most of the migrants were poor nd were acceptable to thier Maharastrinas boss...but with the time these migrants started catchig up with their marathi counterparts...here the real race began ...they were now elected as MLAs nd MPs nd started to be a strong contender to Marathis..How can ny boss be comfortable to be at equal footings with thier slaves? Protest was natural...n number of reasons were floated to justify thier strife against these migrants like spoiling the culture, polluting the city, son of the soils theory etc etc ...may be some of these theory were justified but main reason was slave nd boss sharing tea on same table...it wil take human civilisation to get accustomed to these things...until then such regionalism would keep erupting nd making headines

The solution lies in doing away with linguistic states, creating smaller states for better administration, decentralising all central government establishments like head quarters of all oil companies, several banks, airlines, railways (central and western), financial institutions, RBI etc out of Mumbai and distribute them all over India so that eqaul distribution of employement all over India. Right now most of the employement in organised sector is concentrated in Mumbai which is regarded as the Commercial capital of India. Even from a strategic point of view concentrating all major commercial and financial institutions in Mumbai is quite dangerous. God forbid, if Mumbai is destroyed whole of India's economy is destroyed. Or else declare all major cities of India as Union territories. Down with parochialism. Hard earned freedom of India should not be lost due to in fighting and narrow mindedness,Jai Hind.
