Real Indian Idol
by JinTaraPhuki on Jun 26, 2008 12:04 PM  Permalink

He is among the real Indian idol who needs to be emulated by every young Indian unlike fake "silver screen " heroes.
Brave son-of-the-soil. Wish you a speedy recovery. Hope you win this 'health' battle too and come out hale and hearty.
General Douglas McArthur said, "Old soldiers never retire, they just fade away". Wish you a speedy recovery.

FM Sam Maneckshaw
by Mambakkam Subramanian on Jun 26, 2008 12:01 PM  Permalink

He was a great soldier and more than that he was a very simple and friendly soul. I had the previlege of meeting him on a couple of occassions. The first time it was in the Cochin Airport and he was in company with a Retired Army Colonel who was the Chairman Managing director of the company in which I had worked a few years earlier. My ex-boss had the simple courtesy of remembering me by name and inquiring about my welfare. Incidentally he introduced me to Uncle Sam casually as one of the ex-employees of the company where he was the CEO.

After three or four years I had already changed a few more jobs and I accidentally met up with FM Maneckshaw at the Coimbatore Railway station where he had come to board a train to some place. Surprise of surprises he remembered me by name and was very courteous in asking about the welfare of both myself and the Colonel. In todays "I-Me-Mine world, it would be too much to expect even about your close friends in the past if you are out of touch with them for a decade or so. For this to happen with a casual acquaintance in the airport transit it is just impossible. That possibly epitomised the generation to which the Field Marshal belonged. May God grant him peace, health and relief from his present illness.

The last time I saw him at the Welligton Gymkhana Club, a few yeras back. He was frail but he was charming as ever. I saluted him and he returned it with a smile. I had met him many years back and had talked to him. He was enigmatic.A great hero. It is sad to hear that he has slipped into coma. Pray God he recovers soon.

Dear Field Marshall,
May the death be as glorious to you as your life has been. I hope the country acknowledges your great bravery and heroism.
You have been an asset to the nation which is now thankless. But the brother in Arms know your dedication and passion for this nation and the beautiful organization called The Indian Army.

Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw

He did do great things during the war.
Later during peace time he lent his name to shady finance companies, like HARVEST FINANCE at Mumbai, PRUDENTIAL (or similar sounding name) at Calcutta, n some more, that I can not recall at this monent n time.
Many investors felt secured at seeing Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw's name as one of the directors. too bad, all these finance companies failed n investors suffered.

Sick that someone remembers only this thing about him.
Many people who achieved fame were misused by shady finance companies to give credibity to their operation.
I also think that the word 'investor' is a misnomer since any one who invests in a company based on the fact that there is a Sam Manekshaw on the board of directors is fool not a investor !
Most Indian consumers are pretty stupid . If you chose to buy a laptop because someone who has only a pretty face to claim like Vidya Balan you are stupid! Should you not have asked for an endorsement from Narayana Murthy or Nikalani?
Dont forget that old adage ' a fool and his money are parted "

Great Sam
by annie on Jun 26, 2008 11:25 AM  Permalink

When Indira gandhi lost the elecion, but wanted to continue in office there were reports of Military take over of India........and Sam prudently kept the army in barracks and never indulged in the power game and never interfered in civil matters.......Babu Jag jeeven ram wanted the reservation policy to be extended to armed forces and Sam manekshaw snubbed him and kept Indian armed forces away from this monster of reservation.............After his retirement
the Govt never appointed a Field Marshall till this date now what we have is a seperate heads of Army,Navy and Air force.........
