Internal Security is our biggest problem
by Jai Max on Jun 24, 2008 11:04 PM  Permalink

Just look around yourself and how life has become under threat. It is terrorism, communal tensions and class struggles that are going to make life in this country than any of the perceived external threats. Unless we are able to address the problem of poverty, we would be spending all our taxes on ensuring law and order and yet achieve nothing meaningful results. External threat still needs to be met without conventional war. India having nuclear weapons did not stop invaders of Kargil. Why do we want to sacrifice economic progress in the alter of the meaningless pursuit of nuclear weapons

nuclear is no clear
by chanakya on Jun 24, 2008 10:52 PM  Permalink

Knowing that India will never again be able to defend herself against CHINA or PAKISTAN on nuclear arena,
Knowing that India will be naked before China and from all those who want to attack Mumbai, DELHI, Chennai, Calcutta from anywhere including space,
Knowing that India will loose self-esteem and self-respect before even a petty country,
Knowing that India will fall at the feet of the US AND WILL NEVER BE ABLE TO STAND UP AGAIN,
Knowing this will make India a market ready for sales of all dangerous nuclear plants with "Bhopal style third world technology" so that only people in power can be assured of kickbacks in billions of dollars at the peril of poor people,
Knowing that those sales are made with taxpayer's money that is from your purse and mine,
Knowing that with our money, those white people will revive their jobs and the industries while here Indians will loose their jobs (because scientists will loose jobs because thorium-based units will be put in the backburner)
Knowing that with plenty of rupees in their hands after selling their radio-active units to India, the Americans will be in a position to inject that money in our market contributing to inflation,
Knowing that the same Americans will revise their initial prices and pressure our TREASURY to pay billions more, what will do Chidambaram ?
He will just increase your taxes and deprive you the pleasure of living a happy life.
Knowing that some psychology is necessary to see through this serious conspiracy again

Why are these scientists concerned over only security and not poverty
by Jai Max on Jun 24, 2008 10:46 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

If nuclear bombs could provide security then America would not have been subject to the horrifying experiences of 9/11. Nuclear bombs are literally meaningless in the age of terrorism and suicide bombers. America could not win clearly either in Afghanistan or Iraq with all the nuclear arsenal it possesses. I do not know why so much is talked about a security instrument which can never be used. Instead, India needs to spend more on creating intelligent e governance systems, which would help track terrorists activities. It is a pity that government after government has failed to ensure basic law and order. There is no centralized information system on criminals and their activities. All those who are talking about National Security must understand that the urgent need of the hour is to prevent terrorism and Nandigram type events. It is poverty that is fueling internal strife and emergence of Maoist groups. The country would be better off focusing on solving the problem of poverty first and ensuring internal security than thinking about more nuclear weapons that would solve none of our problems. Why can't we be more realistic?

TO TOP SCIENTISTS
by damodaran mohan on Jun 24, 2008 09:08 PM  Permalink

1. The IAEC has been fully involved to take care of the implications, nuclear deterrence and the issue relating to Additional Protocol etc. mentioned in the above Technical Ramayana . It cannot be open to a public debate.
2.Weakening of indigenous R&D efforts : this deal on the contrary should STRENGTHEN by ending the nuclear apartheid of our scientists. As an underdeveloped country in the fifties to seventies India made spectacular progress in the Nuclear field but ironically in the 21st century as an emerging POWER India has fallen far behind. This deal attempts to bridge that gap aimed at long term ENERGY SECURITY needs.
3.The Hyde Act has to be construed as part of the national laws of signatory countries which will anyway come into effect in case of breach . No country will offer us Deal with a commitment of shipment of Uranium and the right to carry out Test which will always be at a cost with or without a Deal. We have faced it amply already. The moot question is whether we are Technically as advanced as the Nuclear nations to dictate our terms !
4 UPA- LEFT committee: even the lay man on the street knows its significance. The reaction of the LEFT spokesman to SP is enough to understand what exactly are their objections.

I fully support P K Iyengar and other scientists
by Bharat Kr on Jun 24, 2008 07:44 PM  Permalink

I fully support P K Iyengar and others. Communist parties are born anti-US. They need no negative aspects to oppose the deal with US. Moreover, if India develops and propsers, who will vote for comunists? So, they have to work hard to keep India backward and poorer. For we patriots, we are for strong relations and ties with US. But the deal in its present form is unequal and unfair to India. Read the Hyde Act. Clauses in the Hyde Act will strip India to conduct future nuclear tests, and even US may blackmail India to give up nuclear weapon program. Note, Manmohan Singh condemned the 1998 India's nuclear tests, so he hardly cared for weapon program. He made a deal with US, from position of weakness, only to garner credit for himself. It is our belive, if comes to power, BJP-NDA govt will renegotiate the deal. It was the BJP-NDA govt who initiated the nuclear business with US. And it is BJP can only carry forward.

Whether Muslims or CPI(M) are against it, does not matter.
by Dipak Bose on Jun 24, 2008 05:49 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Whether Muslims or CPI(M) are against it, does not matter. What matters is the security of the country from nuclear attacks by China and Pakistan and India's freedom to develop nuclear energy freely without being a slave of USA which since 1974 did everything to prevent India from developing nuclear energy.
One should never trust USA.

The comments made some here are just hilarious.
by XianYe on Jun 24, 2008 05:45 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

First blame the lefts.

Now blame the scientists.

Next blame whom? China? haha...yes, why not!

India is better off developing its coal and hydro-power the way China has been doing for decades. Only after you've had as many coal-fired and hydro plants as China does today, you may start thinking about using other energy alternatives, including nuclear power. That means India should focus on conventional sources of energy for at least 20-30 years. Yes, that is how much Chian is ahead of India.

Yes XianYe, coal powered development in India. Can you take breaths in China's air? Why athlets don't want to participate in Olympics? China is the most polluted country in the world, its rivers flow industrial pollutions, not pure water. Its air can't breath, beware of visiting China. We India don't want to pollute our air and rivers. Thanks for suggestions.

LISTEN TO THE SCIENTISTS
by Kris iyer on Jun 24, 2008 05:22 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Thank You, Rediff., for highlighting this submission by three important scientist/administators of nuclear power.
1) The scientists know the "materials used, the processes used and implications with each". We have to listen to them.
2) International lawyers say this Indo-US Deal is one of the MOST COMPLEX they have come across - At least FOUR different parties involved with FOUR different agreement - every agreement INTER-ACTING with each other. With lawyers and politicians, everything GETS COMPLICATED.
3) The electricity produced will be TOO EXPENSIVE. Remember the Enron's Dhabol unit? They were charging the Maharashtra govt., too much and the deal broke down.
4) NO RELIABILITY OF SUPPLY OF FUEL: The scientists have a lot to say on this point. A nuclear power plant without fuel is like feeding a WHITE ELEPHANT, just standing, no use. The power-plant will leak radio-activity, if not maintained properly.
5) This Indo-U.S. deal will KILL all Indian RESEARCH into making our own way with Thorium, mine our own Uranium and ALTERNATIVE ENERGY SOURCES like Wind, Solar Energy.
6) With much less investment, India can produce the same percentage of electricity with SOLAR ENERGY as with Nuclear power. The Photo-voltaic cells are getting better.
DO RESEARCH HERE IN INDIA TO SOLVE INDIA'S NEEDS.
The UPA govt., is a LAZY GOVT.,good only for playing communal /caste politics.
SHOW confidence in our scientists and be patient. The meek shall inherit value with hard-work.
