In basic principle, I am for the deal The reason is simple - we have access to Uranium for peaceful purposes. Without the deal, we do not have access. I am not sure if we should build nuclear power plants as the mechanisms to handle nuclear waste are still suspect. We may be leaving an unwanted legacy for future generations. The only point which is not understandable is why the Government cannot insist on ratification by deal by Parliament. All developed democracies have this clause in international agreements ( which is what is the 123 Agreement by US senate & Congress is all about). Why is it that we do not have this clause in all our Agreements ?
However, the deal is good for India as it gives us an option which is otherwise nonexistent.

Why we don't support the deal in its present form: 1. It will ban India's future nuclear tests, 2. It will stop nuclear weapon program upgradation, even asked to rollback, 3. US will blackmail India in their national and international interests. This is a deal for around 40 years, not 1 or 2 years. Read the Hyde Act carefully and think.

The Hyde Act is a domestic Act of the US and because it is so, is non-binding on India. However, technically, the Hyde Act binds the US (not us) while implementing the agreement. India likewise can have our own domestic laws that bind us not the US while implementing the agreement. So if each nation is adamant, it creates a gridlock. In practice and otherwise, international treaties supersede domestic laws.
hey object to the deal on the specious argument that it does not permit us to test our nuclear weapons.
The operating word is in the event of nuclear testing. Even here the agreement provides an exception - the right to test if China or Pakistan tests.
No one in the nuclear community believes any more for the need to physically test. They now test through computer simulation using past test data.
This is the reason why Vajpayee government shrewdly went for a series of explosions (5 to be precise) - to generate such a data base.
Having done that Vajpayee gave an assurance to the world through his address to the General Assembly of the UN that India no longer needs to explode any nuclear devise.
So if we are take BJP's present position seriousily, was Vajpayee and BJP in 2000 lying to the world community?

2)ONLY 30% OF PEOPLE ARE GETTING HIGHER POWER SUPPLY, BUT DIDN'T YOU NOTICE THAT WE ALL ARE STILL FACING INFLATION AND OTHER HEALTH HAZARD HIGHER THAN ANYONE IN THE WORLD? FOR EG AIDS AND CANCER AND SUGAR ETC. GETTING USED TO OF SEDENTARY LIFESTYLE WHICH IS A SILENT KILLER. INTERESTINGLY, OUT OF OUR 30% OF POPULATION, MOST OF THE POWER ARE USED BY THE MNC AND COMPANIES DEPENDANT ON THEM. WHICH MEANS EVEN WHEN GOVERNMENT GETS MORE POWER IT WOULD BE AGAIN GIVEN TO MNC AND ASSOCIATED WHO HAVE MIGRATED FROM AMERICA AND OTHER FOOLISH PLACES TO TAME OUR RESOURCES.
JUST THINK IF WE THROGH OUR THESE COMPANIES OUT AND FORCE GOVERNMENT TO GIVE POWER TO OUR FARMERS IN FIRST PLANCE AND THEN TO CITIES AND INDUSTRIES, THEN WE WOULD NOT REQUIRE THIS NUKE DEAL......... IT IS THAT SIMPLE, WE DON'T NEED NUKE DEAL IF OUR FARMERS ARE GIVEN THE PRIORITY ABOVE THE CITIES, AND MNC ARE THROWN OUT.

International protocol demands that draft agreements are not be placed in the public domain as it might hamper negotiations.further our diplomats and scientists cannot be easily won over and they have proved it in 123 once again that they are the hardest nuts to crack when it comes to treaties.so there is no point in showing the commies any agreement as they have been opposin it tooth and nail since we announce the deal..we cannot expect them to be pro-india when the deal puts us on par with china in the global nuclear arena which they obviously despise.

Fair enough. Did Vajpayee take the permission of people of India before blasting the bomb in Pokhran II. If he didn't that there was no need to sign this present deal.
The NSG was constituted by the US as a reaction to Pokhran II. After NSG was established, spares and uranium fuel was denied to India and even friendly countries like Russia and France were dissuaded not to supply these to us.

Assuming that it is question the answer would be Sonia Gandhi, Manmohan Singh and the Congress party - who for almost 5 years ran a government with their support. Ask yourself how hard the Congress tried to bring the Left in to the Government in 2004? Again in 2009 if the Congress can reach the magic numbers with the Left support do you have any doubt that they will go for it again! The Congress and those pitching for the Congress should decide if the Left is good or bad ! They can be good today , bad tommorrow and again good the day after !
