Images of India in American minds
by M. Shankar on Feb 29, 2008 10:00 AM  Permalink

Either the concerned Ministries of Information & Broadcasting, or Trade & Commerce, or Tourism and Cultural Affairs, etc which have a responsibility to project the realistic and right image of India are not doing a good job with the USA, or the writer has happened to have met exceptionally ill informed morons who knew nothing even about the basic truths. Their knowledge was limited to the old Indian tales of rope tricks, and snake charmers, and probably the Maharajas and Princes! We can only hope such ill informed groups are very small in number.

I only shudder to imagine if such people came to power there and were to deal with them what kind of endless problems we would get into.

It's frightening...by Dhuv Goel.

Congratulations to Dhruv for the bold and right answers and generating awareness about the Indians and INDIA.THERE ARE BEGGERS IN THE USA
and most of the developed countries.I visited Germany,Frankfurt book fair in the beggining of this century,I saw beggers on the road.Only difference that I found was, they were relatively very well dressed with shoes on...!
Some people for their own vested interest, had
taken movies and videos of INDIA,showed them as projects and earned money, only to created apartially true image of India.Yes due to the tropical weather the population is very high eating away all the plans as regards the development.But...as very rightly Dhruv has answered there are are many many cities and areas prospored almost like developed countries.
In many fields of development we are second to none e.g.SPACE,IT etc.
One can give an example of the fastest developping city Surat and other cities in Gujarat.Mumbai,Delhi,Kolkata,Chennai,Bangalore,HYDERABAD,Ahmedabad and so on. Well done,Dhruv.
India is shining inside and outside as well !

Some people asked me whether we would find snakes in bathrooms :), Different people have different perceptions there in US, mostly they think we are very poor and thats why we are working in US.

Ignorance?
by Vijay T on Feb 29, 2008 09:53 AM  Permalink

We have developed an educational system by which we make our children know (as we want them to know) America and other countries, for which we even ignore India. We even go to the extent of denigrading the Nation. We take that much care. Is it not enough dear Americans? Why are you not doing like us? This is unfair. This is selfishness.

Indians also have misconceptions about US and other countries. Like all the Americans are divorced..they walk naked on the streets and have sex anywhere ..any time ..there are no family ties in US and Indian culture is the best. In China people think that the Indias are muslims/buddhists. They don't even know there something exists called Hindusim. All the sardarjieez are from middle east..some think Indian women wear hijab and some are surprised that I wear trousers and shirts being an Indian girl. The most common and funny thing is that they think that all the Indians can dance and sing as if they will find Indians dancing and singing on the streets in India :).As pe Chinese India is the land of elephants and snake charmers and maharajaz and these Chinese may even be surprised on not seeing Indians dancing with snakes and on the elephants at Cannaught place :)). And as someone well said..many Indians think that all the Panjabiz are sardars. The first thing that an average Indian will say about China..O they are so short height! they eat frogs, snakes , ants. Not all the Chinese eat all these and Chinese average height is the same as Indians.

PALKIWALA'S EXP IN US AS AMBASSADOR
by K NAGARAJAN on Feb 29, 2008 09:50 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

SOME TIME IN EARLY 80's WHEN I WAS IN GUJARAT, A PLACE CALLED ATUL, I HAPPEND TO HEAR MR. PALKIWALA, WHO HAD JUST RETURNED FROM RELINQUISHING HIS POSITION AS AMBASSADOR. DURING HIS VISIT AND ADDRESS IN VARIOUS UNIVERSITIES, THE ONE QUESTION THAT HE COULDN'T ANSWER TO HIS SATISFACTION WAS 'WHILE FEW AMONG TOP 50 IN ALL THOSE UNIVERSITIES ARE INDIANS, WHY INDIA, WITH SUCH TALENTED MANPOWER REMAIN AS UNDERDEVELOPED AND NOT DEVELOPED'. HE EXPLAINED TO US THAT IT'S THE POLITICIANS WHO ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR SUCH SORRY STATE OF AFFAIRS, KEEPING THE COUNTRY 'UNDER-DEVELOPED' INSPITE OF SUCH VAST RESOURCES. HIS STATEMENT IS ALL THE MORE RELEVANT EVEN TODAY. TODAY ALL POLITICIANS CLAIM THAT THEY ARE 'FOR PEOPLE' WHEREAS THE STORY IS THE OPPOSITE. WHILE IN RULING PARTY THEY DON'T WANT CRITICISM AND CLAIM WHATEVER THEY AREDOING IS GOOD FOR THE PEOPLE AND THE SAME POLITICIANS WHEN IN OPPOSITION CLAIM WHATEVER RULING PARTY IS 'ANTI-PEOPLE'. WHO WILL SAVE THIS COUNTRY FROM SUCH ELEMENTS?? BESIDES OF LATE WE HAVE TOO MANY POLITICIAL PARTIES, I CALL THEM AS 'UNEMPLOYED' AND 'NON-EMPLLOYABLES' ELSEWHERE AND I WISH THAT WE GET A LEADER WHO BOLDLY EARMARKS SOME FUNDS AS 'POLITICAL FUND' AND KEEP SUCH ELEMENTS AWAY FROM DAY-TO-DAY TINKERING.

Recently Minister Mr. Sibal visited Australia and on the SBS Hindi channel Ms. Jaya Sharma took his interview. Jayaji asked him, when India is progressing so fast why the intelligent people are leaving for jobs in foreign countires such as USA etc. To that the Minister replied that about 25000 NRIs have come back since 'we have offered them good job with big salaries and best facilities'. This is a very wrong assumption that our scholars are leaving the country for better life. They go out because they are certain that their talents will be recognised abroad. 25 years back my friend's son went to USA in a big IT company. One day the company was stuck up with a problem and they were about to loose millions. His son requested them to handover the papers and he will find the solution. Within two days he could solve the problem. Immediately that Company recognised his talent, he was promoted as a President of the Company and given a big pay cheque along with a big bungalow with 10 acres of surrounding beautiful garden. If this would happened in India, he would not have got credit for his achievment but somebody from Ministry would put forth their cousin to take credit and this fellow would have been even dismissed that he should not make any complaint etc. So recognition of talent is the main criteira for which the intelligent go abroad and not for job. Recently my son's friend an IT professional left for Africa leaving the central government job because he was very much bored of

60% of Texans believed Saddam Hussain was behind 9-11 attacks and that is why Bush attacked Iraq. And they reelected him.
