And the reason for his defiance after getting arrested is
"80% of Supreme Court Judges in India are Brahmins"....
Do NOT expect a fair trial in India.

Dr Amit is a victim of supply/demand
by Sam on Feb 10, 2008 11:08 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

There is a very high demand for organs. If Dr Amit does not supply, someone else will.

This demand will only increase. If a poor person is willing to give one kidney for rs 1 lakh, whats the harm? Poor man gets the money he needs and the dying rich person gets the kidney. Everyone is home happy, noone is harmed.

I don't think he is guilty of any crime.

mr kumba .please note that only blood relatives can donate kidneys.if you really care for genuine patients awaiting kidney transplant then you can give your address and under the act you are entitled for this but your kidney will be transplanted by only qualified surgeon and you will defeinetly get more than 1 lac .

Success of India's foreign policy

Rsight/Wrong - Good/bad apart

Getting a convict extradited from Nepal is the biggest diplomatic victory. Best I think that can be managed in current scenario.

Punishing him or not is the matter with Congress' estimated fortune in coming elections. Sonia JI is capable of Pardoning criminals like Afzal, why not this...

Renal transplants
by Abu Philips Abraham on Feb 10, 2008 08:10 AM  Permalink

There is no doubt that renal transplants are life saving. For a patient with renal failure the chance of living longer is significantly better with a transplant. This is also associated with reduced expenditure over a period of 2-3 years compared to dialysis.

The ethical questions remain difficult. The main argument against a paid renal transplant is that this effectively rules out patients who do not have the means to pay. Having said that the it does not prevent people from resorting to illegal means to get there. Legalising it would ensure a certain accountability on behalf of the docotrs and the recipients. Eliminating the middleman would ensure the donor is adequately compensated. Evaluating the donor is very importnat to ensure he has a very low risk of future renal disease. These are very complex issues that need to be tackled as our society gets more mature.

We need to begin with promoting deceased donor transplants. A central databse would be a first step in this direction. Each state needs to designate key hosiptals in this regard.

Doctors in India do have to recognise their responsibilities and trust placed in them. In turn the community needs to recognise their value and compensate them appropriately.

So no court in India can jail him or sentence him guilty. As simple as that. I am sure he will be put in bail like million others in India and will resume his office very soon.

Blinded by corruption?
by on Feb 10, 2008 06:02 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Looks like you have difficulty identifying what is wrong and what is right. That's what happens when you live in a totally corrupt society.

Open your eyes. The fellow tried to profit from selling kidneys of the poor. That's the problem. And he deserves to be behind bars.
Agreed, it might be better to have legislation that legalizes the sale of kidneys in a transparent manner by those willing to do so. But, middlemen (the unscrupulous Indian middle class) who try to make money out of it should be punished.

Might be he has done kidney trading. What right has the media to call him Dr Horror.
Look at the positive part of the story. There were many lives saved by this kidney transplants.
Organ trade should be legalized and streamlined.
People should come forward to donate organs for the people in need.
Even though many people want to donate kidneys for exchange of money our government has no proper law for it.
If a donor and receiver are willing for whatever monetory or health benefits each one of them gets why should the government and legal system interfere?

If someone is willing to donate his kidney for a price and this guy is willing to do it, what's the problem? This is a poor country and for many people, their body parts are the only things that will fetch money which they got. Why is this guy getting a bad rap?

He is supposed to have stolen kidneys. Even Otherwise, consider this.

If you sell me two bananas , but I pay you for one what you do? You'll likely beat me up. Losing banana is not going to kill you. Now suppose you sold me a kidney and I pay you only half. Kidney is not a banana , lack you one can kill you. Now what do you do? Won;t you be out there to kill me?
