''Sania and Leander have done a fantastic job for Indian tennis. By performing so well on the world stage they have brought attention, light on this great nation of ours,'' says Davis Cupper Prakash Amritraj.

"Sania and Leander have done a fantastic job for Indian tennis. By performing so well on the world stage they have brought attention, light on this great nation of ours," says Davis Cupper Prakash Amritraj.

"Leander will be remembered as a true patriot, one who has served his country with undying devotion," Vishal Uppal says of his former team-mate.

"Leander has kept the Indian flag flying high for the past 19 years. He has brought out the best in him whenever he has played for the country. Players like him come very rarely."

While Leander took over the baton from India's tennis dynasties, the Krishnans and the Amritrajs, Sania almost pioneered the Indian woman's cause.

"I think Sania represents every Indian female athlete who has tried to make it in professional sport, but has failed due to various reasons," adds Uppal.

"She has broken all barriers for Indian women and has encouraged many young girls to take up to tennis. She has shown that Indian women not only can play sport, but can also make a mark on the world stage."

Isha Lakhani, Sania's Fed Cup teammate, says the Hyderabadi lady has inspired an entire generation to take up tennis.

"I can see for myself that more and more girls are picking up tennis, thanks to Sania. I think it's a great achievement to break into the top-30 and stay thereabouts for so long."

Role of Sports Media Managers
by mukesh sharma on Aug 13, 2008 05:59 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Shameless Indian sports media managers have no grudge on failures of so called sports icon.

In above given article they have tried hard to hide the failure of the most hyped sports personalities of the world.

In last 5 years just evaluate the achievements of Sania its close to negligible. Still some how media managers are trying to salvage their so called white collars.

Just belittling sania won't help. Leander at 30 plus is still wins a match or two for india compare to younger generation. Sania might not get much opportunity to play for country but at least inspire a generation of young kids and their parent to take a serious look at tennis. Yes whenever she goes sthe first sentence the commentator anywhere in the world will say she represent 100 million people and carryes the weight of the whole nation. Propbably sometime she too might be thinking its only individual game with country not getting any benefits but still people will reminder her. To reach top 100 itself is great with no coach. People see only hpye and her advertisement revenue but they forget that inspite of all hype unlike other top class player she cann't afford a coach on continuous basis. Neither the country she represent can pay her enough to get a desent coach. Same with leander. With no coach, no proper training place [india doesn't have any world class and abroad its bit too high] these people are atleast making the world take notice that India does exist. Though leander went to play some memorable game for India, Sania made sure that India too can get an opportunity to host some of the teir III level of WTA matches which will definately give more opportunity to future generation to get expose to international tennis and gain valuable experience at the early stage of their career. No matter what its sania mirza who made all of us to see tennis as sport lik

CRICKET IS NOT A RECOGNISED SPORT
by stephen francis on Aug 13, 2008 05:51 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Please all you guys should realise one thing"CRICKET IS NOT A SPORT". This Cricket is played only by English and its erstwhile colonies. Rather Cricket was a game, which was invented to entertain the british viceroys & governor generals. It was a pass time game. The international fraternity never realised this as sport. Sadly, all the former colonies continued to play the game, when the world has rejected this sport & NEVER PLAYED AT THE OLYMPICS. Cricket was viciously designed to kill time and deviate the attention of the people from other constructive purpose like NATION BUILDING, WEALTH & HEALTH BUILDING and betterment of the society. The parasite yet lurks in and a nation of 1.3 billion people, is pushed back by a day everytime theres a match. Isn't it irony, first GOLD MEDAL for the first time in 150 years of OLYMPICS HISTORY. Cheers Bindra---Death to Cricket..Death to all Cricketers who are UNKNOWN elsewhere in the world.

Well, with the exception of Formula 1, almost all the games that currently exist started as pass time activity. So it doesnt take anything away from cricket. And even though cricketers are unknown in parts of the world where cricket is not played, it doesnt make their achievements any lesser. For that matter, almost 50% of people in India and China (who constitute nearly one third of world population) would fail to recognize Kobe Bryant or Shaquille O'Neal or Michael Jordan. Does that make NBA insignificant ?

Rediff trying to hide Sania's lose
by Shonia on Aug 13, 2008 05:44 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Is this by any mean a try to hide the Sania's lose in Olympics?
The best what India can offer looses 6-1, 2-1 out of the match due to an Injury. I think even the injury was a fake acting to hide her own simple defeat.
And few days back there was a debate whether to hand over the National Flag to Sania :)) A Long way to go, even she have dropped in Rankings to # 60, 10 Rankings behind. Stop praising a lady just 'cos she is glamour oriented and looks good. See the sports as well
