Well, with the exception of Formula 1, almost all the games that currently exist started as pass time activity. So it doesnt take anything away from cricket. And even though cricketers are unknown in parts of the world where cricket is not played, it doesnt make their achievements any lesser. For that matter, almost 50% of people in India and China (who constitute nearly one third of world population) would fail to recognize Kobe Bryant or Shaquille O'Neal or Michael Jordan. Does that make NBA insignificant ?
