It is heartening to see sane words on Rediff. India is not a homogeneous people to adopt one language (hindi) as national language. Of course native hindi speakers would be comfortable to see this implemented. What is wrong if we learn the local language of our work? I think Indians migrating would love to learn French, German, Finnish, English, etc.. especially due to the compulsory rules to learn it before being allowed to be a resident. Then why not inetrnal immigrants in India not like to learn the local language? By the way, I am not a Kannadiga.
politicians any how provokes this issue, its the people of karnataka to decide what to do!i saw people in bangalore attacking non-locals and using slang against them
RE:then call back all kannad people from other parts of india ..

Correct.. If kannad people (also called as kannadigas) "refuse" to learn the local language of the place where they are residing, they should be sent back by that state. In the same vein, residents of Bangalore, who have stayed in Bangalore for more than 5 years, and dont know kannada, should be sent back too.
Personally I have seen second and third generation residnets of Bangalore, who do not know even to speak kannada.. Now what do you say bout that?
will this social activist ask kannada people staying outside karnataka to learn the local language where they r staying?!!!devegowda asked for reservation in IT companies operating from bangalore for kanadigas, will these people write software in kannada?
Nandan nileknei, Azim Premji and all these blokes who propser in Karnataka but dont employ Kannadigas. This is cheating of kannadigas. If they want to employ only tamilians let them go set up business in madras.

By the way, there goes a joke, about the T20 WC final.. where SS held the catch of Misbah.. It seems that Misbah was unaware of this law- "Wherever you go, you will find a Mallu" (words to that effect1)!! :D

Skilled workers are hard to find. And skill is not seen from behind linguistic glasses. Even so, most companies have a policy to give preference to the local, if two people have the same skill set. The only unskilled and still hired people I have come across are the Mallus.. They have a tremendous capability of networking, and are hugely biased towards one of their kin!

But learning a different language should not be forced. If I do not want nobody can pressurize you.

Right. In that case, the rest of the people with whom you interact, need not be forced to reply to you in a language you understand. Nobody can "pressurize" them, you see.. Yet, you are ungrateful for the minor adjustments made by them for your well being and happy stay, to now say that "I dont want to learn THEIR language". Why the hell should you be supported by the locals then, when you are never part of THEIR culture, or society, and never plan to be one!?

Ur right, we are indians just love to hate locals of any other local place. because u wil be immigrating to other place with good profile job, and majority locals will do all kind of job . so we always have distinguishing based on their profile. this is not just bangalore problem. its we indians problem. Try to get answer in english a person reading english paper in chennai street, u wont get. but they write big lecture in rediff forum. its not just for chennai, its every where in india. because we are all same. we never change. from 5000 years of history we lived with pieces of kingdoms.
Initially it was Maharashtra where in people have to learn Marathi ..
Next its karnakata ..next it will be some other states ..
If this continues then people living in India ( especially defense forces , para-mil forces ) will need to learn 29 languages as there are 29 states in India.. LOL

One needs to move with the times. The points put forth by shri anantamurthy assume some amount of past baggage. a government has to assume full responsibility for illiteracy and poverty. the rest must be left to market forces. if this is not done china will rule supreme.

Ananthmurthy is a social thinker. If he says something, it must be given due seriousness. Learning a language amidst people is a great opportunity. Never consider it as a liability. English has bluntted our thinking process.
