Food crisis
by P Mudiraj on Apr 17, 2008 04:19 PM  Permalink

The need for a second green revolution is felt for more than a decade now. We have one of the best scientific pool in the world but the journey from lab to land never happens due to mainly politics in campuses of agricultural unuversaties. Secondly the extension wing of africulture / horticulture departments in every state is manned by staff who are never found at their places of posting. The extension staff is absolutely dud about agricultural sciences and current developments and are mainly hand in glove with agri-input dealers who indulging in sale of spurious seeds and pesticides.

Its high time that govt wakes up to these raelities and brings in radical reforms to improve the health of Indian agri sector so that we have enough to eat and there are no farmers' suicides.

Shortage!
by Gulf Sheikh on Apr 17, 2008 04:08 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

The culprit behind all of this is the US. They use so much of world's resources, they have drained the planet empty of oil and other mineral resources without giving a damn. Now the world is short of food because a small portion of Indians have started eating two meals a day. The Americans spend billion each day for a war that has no end in sight. To finance this binge and feed their unsatiable propensity to consume, they are printing currency to bridge deficit and borrow money from Chinese and other other oil producing nations, in the process devaluing the dollar to that of a mere paper. Now the oil producing countries want more paper to compensate the loss in the value of the dollar. So, the price of oil is climbing. Since, oil price is rising, the world is using food grains to produce fuel. So, there is shortge of food grains. If America stops its war and all able bodied Americans (& citizens of other countries too) park their car(s) in the garage & cycle for one full year, then all is this price inflation and shortage will vanish.

Todays Congress govt is a band of Jokers. Playing emotions of people by divide & rule policy. If farmers are getting more money, govt get irritated & ban exports of foods for price control. what about govt employees who are not worthy of their work want to implement 6 th pay commission.

Food Problem
by Srinivas vishnu on Apr 17, 2008 03:49 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Right from the day the Govt came to power, it was interested in controlling and keeping people in its hold. So there is much canvass about Ration cards etc which allows it to control peoples emotions and rob their time in long ration queues. Some Govts are also talking about subsidised 2Kg rice and it is interesting to see how they do it for the election drama. Meanwhile, the multi-national brand chain stores and corporate outlets such as food bazaars (Pantaloons, Reliance, Subhiksha, Apna Bazaar, Spencers etc) are hoarding up the supplies in the name of distribution to their outlets. Such hoarding was a crime a few years ago but now legal for corporates. Lets wait and see the next Famine. Till then, the govt will fill the bellies of have-nots with alcohol and trinklets until the elections day passes by.
