Dear Colonel Athale
Thank you very much for bringing out this article on Maj General Palit. It is indeed heartening to know about our long term thinking among Military strategist(s). Thanks are also due to rediff because of them we could know of a soldier like MajGen Palit. I look forward to more such articles but one question that keeps bothering me is lack of interest(my perception) of joining military services in these age and times. I keep also reading about our officers/soldiers quitting frequently. I understand that people in general in this country still hold army(and not necessarily paramilitary forces) with due respect, but yes respect alone can not hold against numerous options except for those who choose defence services. When i hear on 140 Chinese intrusions in a year and our excuses of LAC not being defined,i am not sure what to make of it.We may not be a nation of agressors, but we must defend what is rightfully ours. I was reading reference to Gurodongma while Chinese intrusions were described and could relate to it as i have been there. Why do not we have military exercise on Himalayan borders, last one was perhaps 15 years ago !! Noone respects the weak.We still have a long way to go to our erstwhile glory as a Nation even though we may not want to project it consciously. Thanks & Jai Hind

We need more people like him to bring a revolutionizing change in the indian military, its leadership and its strategizing.
I do think that people who have really made a big difference are him and Major General Sam Manekshaw.

He dedicated himself, god bless him.

Karandas

Please do not belittle Sam Manekshaw by referring him as Major General. He should be referred as Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw. There have been only tow Field Marshals in the Indian Army. The other one was Field Marshal Cariappa, the first Indian to don the Army Chief' post.

Salute to Maj. Gen. Patil
by Ajey Gotkhindikar on Apr 08, 2008 07:58 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

We must thank to Maj Gen Patil for fascilitating so much literature for peolpe to read. His experience of fighting the war and leading from front must be vital. Specifically the win over the Mohhamad ni Gali near Haji Pir is really inspiring. The Maratha history has been dsitroyed by the British. Marathas fought with Mughals for 23 years. Aurangzeb himself came with his all his might to Maharashtra, but could not win over Maharashtra and finally was burried in Maharashtra. Marathas scored several victories over British. Especially at the see they kept the British at the bay. During 1857 war of Independence Maratha warriers did a commendable job. Thanks to Col Anil Athale for briging these issues forth and also providing inspiring information on Maj Gen Patil.

A marathi has written the tribute - so drop the unnecessary marathi bashing. Who cares what state one belongs to as long as one is patriotic...
