It is easy to lose track of the big picture in the euphoria of economic growth, but this growth is not balanced and is affecting only small sections of the society. Is this the sort of growth that we want? India is poised for greatness, but we cannot afford to lose track of social issues in pursuing economic growth. A record GDP growth rate means nothing for the millions who don%u2019t have food to eat, or water to drink.
When are we going to see an India which is less corrupt.Corruption is deep rooted and it will take not less than 50 years to remove corruption if we start today. I think it is time we must have a column "None of the above" along with the name of the candidates in all the election process in India starting from the Panchayat elections to the Lok Sabha elections. The challenge will be to see who garner more votes and who is the most eligible. The last time when this point was raised the politicians were the first to oppose such a move as they knew the outcome.
I don't agree with the words 'perishing Indian middle class'. Indian middle class is growing. Everyone believes this. It is also my personal experience. I was born in a lower middle class family. So were most of my friends and others I know personally. And our incomes have been increasing. And I see that more and more people are now being added into this class called the middle class. The rich are becoming richer, true. Misery of some of the poor people has also increased. But the middle class is definitely not perishing. Columnists are supposed to stick to the truth atleast about the present conditions on ground.

It is said that India is a functioning anarchy. It is polyglot, multi-cultural and a very old civilisation with young people. The country is today shorn of new Heroes and the old ones have ceased to be relevent. The Ganges aptly describes the life in this land. It flows on its own. Corruption, procratination, indecision, and prevarication has come to define our national character. These traits have struck deep roots in our public life. The young citizenry is turning cynical and apathetic and although not prone to violence, will begin to espouse it as a way of moving ahead. Religion is losing its hold on the spirit and turning into a bazaar for quick money, and so are the past ideals of Socialism, Rule of the Law, Universal Rights of Man for Liberty, Equality and Fraternity, Concern for our Environment etc. The violation of these ideals has taken on an iconic form. The Heroes of today are those who violate these ideals and openly defy all attempts of a civil society to bring them to justice. Justice delivery system has all but broken down and so is Law Enforcement. Crass consumerism and media entertainment has put the masses to slumber. Only God can save this land. Jai Hind
Very well said article . I have often wondered why this hue and cry about India's growth when a substantial part of the population do not have access to timely health care, safe drinking water and basic infrastructure. The political / legal laws here are so old and outdated , the poor/common man still fights today to get justice. It is the time that India will have to grow up to stand on its own.
