Lie

"The voyage distance from Kolkata to Tuticorin around Sri Lanka works out to 1227 nautical miles. If you went through the canal, it is 1098 nm. So, you are saving just 120 odd nm."

Just look at the map of India is a lie. This guy is saying the entire east and southern coast of srilanka is only 120 nautical miles is wrong. 300-400 nautical miles is the right amount. This is just a proof these brahmins will go to any length to spread lies and rumors. be careful people and what is this guys qulaification, he worked on a submarine, I can tell it is a lie just by looking at a map and i done even need to work on a submarine.

why do you bring caste into this equation did u check his caste before commenting. Even if he is a brahmin, he is a mariner and you are not. So when you try to disprove an expert's statement, use concrete evidence and prove why it is false. I just checked the map and I seen that if we draw equal lines from kolkata to tuticorin and kolkata to south east sri lanka the distance is same. The ship has to cover an extra half of sri lanka's border. Btw there is one advantage to it in that India's sea coast could be a continuous stretch. If I want to travel from chennai to tuticorin I already have the roadways. so big savings certainly dont seem to be the case unless government does the job of drilling and maintenance and forget about cost recovery.Period. How long everything will be looked from a caste angle in this country. You are so much for a casteist than the person you speak of.

Not a correct calculation
by Guest on May 24, 2009 04:57 PM  Permalink

This looks like Mr.Balakrishna has been hired to make a case against the project.

Break even calculation figure is wrong. Interest is assumed at 12% p.a which is almost double of what you pay for this kind of projects. When the principal is getting paid every year the principal and so the interest gets reduced. He has not calculated EMI for 25 years to calculate the break even.

The EMI should be around 102 crores per year whihc is half of what he has projected at 6% p.a interest rate you can get for this kind of projects. This is not a project which is going to end in 25 years once executed. This will also lead to other trade opportunities for the benefit of India and we can develop Tuticorin port and hence international trade.

If the draft is an issue he should actually suggest the optinum draft to get maximum benefit not declare that the project is a waste.

you are going to put rs. 2400 to save national pride..! cmon !
i completely agree with Capt. Balakrishnan.. when the ships, for whom the prject is being underatken.. itself are not going to benefit.. wat the whole point..
In addition.. when u consider the time for pilotage.. you even ave to consider the delays involved on an average in any year..
By Indian Standards, pilots wont be coming up on the ships in time.. add to that.. in bad weather.. pilotage would be still delayed.. in addition, no master would like to take his ship from such a mess particularly in bad weather..to save 2 hours.. in fact.. even if it was to save 1 day.. a master wud have preferred the outer peaceful route, than to put oneself in a mess !

Setu Samudram
by Vishwas Wajapeyi on Jan 22, 2008 04:59 PM  Permalink

As said, its not in peoples interest, its not in the Shipping Corporations interest and may be its not necessary at all.

May be its in the interest of some Italian company which will get the contract.

setu samudram
by NN Ojha on Dec 10, 2007 02:56 PM  Permalink

Capt. Balakrishna's analysis of the futility of Sethusamudram project is excellent and beyond questioning. The protagonists of this absurd project owe an explanation to this country as to what precisely is their motive in pushing forward this useless white elephant. I see only two reasons. First, the greed for cuts out of the contracted cost of the project and second, which could be worse still, the furtherance of some third country's agenda which could be designed to harm our national security. The likely desiccation of our thorium reserves as a result of destruction of the existing ramsetu and the ease with which floating warmachines of Western countries could commute from the Arabian sea to the Bay of Bengal in the absence of this natural barrier definitely indicate to some diabolical game plan against our vital national interests by those who are eager to push the project which makes no 'nautical sense'. We must identify such treachorous elements, go to the root of their motives and bring them to justice for their anti-national activities. Nar Narayan Ojha
